TDOT Region Construction Progress Update

March 18 through March 24, 2010

REGIONWIDE, installation of longitudinal cable barrier rail at various locations on various interstate and state routes: The contractor will have daytime left lane and shoulder closures on Sunday through Friday at several sites along the following state routes: Hamilton County on SR-29 and SR-111; Sequatchie County on SR-111. Estimated completion date is May 2010.

BRADLEY COUNTY, SR-60 (Dalton Pike) road widening from near Gilliland Road to US-64 (SR-311): The contractor will be clearing right-of-way and relocating utilities. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated completion date is June 2012.

CLAY COUNTY, SR-52 bridge construction over New Hope Branch beginning east of New Hope Branch (LM 15.75) to the Cumberland River (LM 17.49), including grading drainage and paving: The contractor is constructing new bridge and performing grading operations. There are no lane closures scheduled at this time. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated project completion date is November 2010.

CLAY / OVERTON COUNTY, SR-52 grading, drainage, paving, and construction of five bridges and retaining wall from existing SR-52 (LM 24.66) to 0.4 mile east of Overton County Line (LM 0.4): The contractor is currently clearing and hauling material. There are no lane closures scheduled at this time. The contractor is using a flagging operation in order to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated project completion date is November 2012.

COFFEE COUNTY, SR-53 bridge construction over I-24 at MM 110 and road widening project (LM 0.00 to LM 4.14): The contractor is currently working on the Phase Two of the bridge over I-24 and widening SR-53. The contractor will have no lane closures on I-24. Detours are set in place on SR-53 to route traffic around construction activity. Estimated completion date is November 2010.

COFFEE COUNTY, SR-127 construction of a concrete Bulb-Tee beam bridge over I-24 between MM 117 and MM 121: (Recovery Act Project) The contractor will have no lane closures on I-24. Estimated completion date is August 2010.

COFFEE COUNTY, US-41 (SR-2) construction of a welded steel girder bridge over the Duck River (LM 12.72) including grading, drainage, and paving: (Recovery Act Project) The contractor is currently clearing, relocating utilities and constructing the first phase of the bridge. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated completion date is November 2010.

CUMBERLAND COUNTY, SR-101 (Lantana Rd.) widening project, including grading, drainage, installation of signals and paving from SR-282 (Dunbar Rd.) to SR-392 (Miller Ave.): (Recovery Act Project) The contractor will be performing clearing work, grading activities and utility relocation. There will be short lane closures and temporary lane stoppages on both SR101 and SR392 for utility relocation and grading activities. Estimated completion date is October 2011.

FENTRESS COUNTY, US-127 (SR-28) grading, drainage, and paving beginning at 0.2 miles north of Big Dry Creek (LM 24.57) and extending to 1.7 miles north of Jamestown (LM 26.26): The contractor is currently performing grading operations. There are no lane closures scheduled at this time. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated project completion date is May 2010.

GRUNDY COUNTY, SR-56, construction of a precast structure over Firescald Creek (LM 21.30), including grading, drainage, and paving: (Recovery Act Project) The contractor is currently performing bridge work on the project. There are no lane closures scheduled at this time. Estimated completion date is April 2010.

HAMILTON COUNTY, US-27 FROM I-24 to the Olgiati Bridge: Geotechnical crews from PSI will be in the area performing core drilling for a future TDOT project. There will be no lane closures as a result of this activity, but there may be occasional shoulder closures during nighttime hours. Please be alert for workers and equipment near the roadway.

HAMILTON COUNTY, I-75 widening project from 1.1 miles south of Lee Highway (SR-2, US-11) to 1.2 miles north of Lee Highway (SR-2, SR-11): The contractor will only need a lane closure on I-75 during this period if there is an emergency situation which requires maintenance of items. If a lane closure is required, one lane of traffic will remain open at all times.

* The contractor will have lane closures on Hill Top Road, Hunter Road, Snow Hill Road, Mountain View Road, Lee Highway, and Old Lee Highway from 8:30 AM until 7:00 PM to construct new roadway and accommodate bridge construction. However, the contractor must move off the roadway from 2:30 PM until 3:00 PM each day during the shift change at Miller Industries. One lane will remain open at all times.

Estimated completion date is December 2010.

HAMILTON COUNTY, construction of concrete bulb-tee beam bridge on US-11 (SR-2, Cummings Hwy.) over Lookout Creek (LM 3.64) including grading, drainage and paving: The contractor will be implementing temporary lane closures or shifts between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM Monday through Saturday in the work zone for utility relocations and bridge construction. Flaggers will be in place to assist with traffic control. Estimated project completion date is July 2011.

HAMILTON, BRADLEY, and MARION COUNTIES, I-75 / I-24 / SR-153 / SR-29 construction of an intelligent transportation system on various interstate and state routes in and near Chattanooga: The contractor will implement shoulder closures throughout this report period within the project area on weekdays between the hours of 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM and anytime on the weekend as part of the ITS construction. On weekdays during non-peak hours, the contractor will have a right lane closure on SR-29 South at MM 2.5. Three lanes are to remain open with third available lane used as acceleration lane for on-ramp from Manufacturers Road. There will also be nighttime lane closures throughout the project between the hours of 10:00 pm. and 5:00 a.m. and intermittent temporary stoppages of traffic (less than 15 minutes) at various locations along the SR-153 corridor to allow the contractor to perform ITS work. THP will assist with traffic control. Estimated completion date is December 2010.

JACKSON COUNTY, SR-56 construction of a concrete box bridge over Crabtree Creek (LM 23.24) including grading, drainage, and paving: The contractor is constructing a new bridge and performing grading operations. There are no lane closures scheduled at this time. The contractor is using a flagging operation in order to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated completion time is July 2010.

LINCOLN and FRANKLIN COUNTIES, US-64 grading, drainage, construction of concrete box bridges, and paving beginning 0.25 miles east of SR-275 (Flintville Road) and extending 0.152 miles east of the Lincoln County / Franklin County Line: The contractor has installed lane shifts to direct traffic around the construction area. Estimated completion date is January 2011.

MARION COUNTY, SR-156 repair of bridge over Tennessee River (LM 15.19): The contactor will be installing signs and barrier rail at this location no lane closures are anticipated. Estimated completion date is April 2010.

MEIGS COUNTY, Lamontville Road construction of a box bridge over Price Creek (LM 4.39) including grading, drainage and paving: (Recovery Act Project) The road over the bridge is closed and traffic is being detoured for the duration of the project. Detour signs are posted to re-direct traffic around the construction area. Estimated completion date is May 2010.

PICKETT COUNTY, SR-154 bridge rehabilitation over Thompson Creek (LM 1.26): The contractor is performing bridge rehabilitation work. The bridge is down to one lane and traffic will be moved through the construction zone with the use of a traffic signal. Estimated completion date is May 2010.

POLK COUNTY, US-64 (SR-40) grading, drainage, and paving beginning east of US-411 (SR-33) and extending to west of the Ocoee River: The contractor has shifted traffic to Phase Two of the project. One lane of traffic in each direction is open from the bridge over US-411 (SR-33) to the Ocoee River. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated completion date is September 2010.

POLK COUNTY, US-411 (SR-33) grading, drainage, construction of three bridges, and paving beginning 0.23 miles south of Lowery Road and extending to 0.32 miles south of Welcome Valley Road: The contractor has shifted traffic to start Phase Two of the project. The contractor is currently excavating, installing drainage structures, and constructing the bridge over the Ocoee River. There are no lane closures scheduled at this time. Estimated completion date is October 2011.

POLK COUNTY, US-411 (SR-33) grading, drainage, construction of three concrete Bulb-Tee beam bridges, and paving beginning at the Benton City Limits and extending to SR-30: (Recovery Act Project) The contractor is currently relocating utilities and grading. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated completion date is September 2011.

POLK COUNTY, US-64 (SR-40) rockfall mitigation project beginning at LM 17.5 to LM 17.8: The roadway remains closed due to the rock slide. Drilling, blasting, rock bolting and hauling operations are expected to continue through the time period as weather permits. The contractor will continue to remove slide and blast debris from the roadway to an off-site waste area. Estimated completion date is March 2010.

PUTNAM COUNTY, I-40 rockfall mitigation at various locations: The contractor will have a right shoulder closure in order to work on the project. Nighttime lane closures will be needed to place mix and set barrier rail to route traffic around construction activities. One lane will be maintained in both directions at all times. Each lane has been narrowed to a 10 foot width. All lane closures will be from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Estimated completion date is July 2010.

PUTNAM COUNTY, SR-62 grading, drainage, and paving from east of Meadow Creek to west of Jim Garrett Road: Contractor is currently working on grading and installing drainage structures. The contractor is using a flagging operation to navigate construction equipment through the project. Estimated completion date is August 2010.

RHEA COUNTY, SR-29 Widening Project from SR-68 Junction to Spring City North City Limits: A traffic shift is in place on the south end of the project to allow construction of a retaining wall next to Spring City Memorial Gardens. The speed limit throughout the project is posted at 40 MPH. There may be short lane closures or temporary lane stoppages due to work along SR-29. Tallent Lane has been re-opened and Kemmer Road has been closed for construction of a box bridge. Estimated completion date is April 2011.

WARREN COUNTY, US-70S (SR-1) relocation of roadway from Centertown to Spring Valley Road including construction of two concrete Bulb-Tee beam bridges, grading, drainage, and some paving: (Recovery Act Project) Grading operation on this project is active. All lanes and side roads are open. Estimated completion date is August 2011.

WARREN COUNTY, SR-286 bridge replacement project (Westwood Bridge) for construction of a concrete bulb-tee bridge over the Barren Fork River (LM 2.54) including grading, drainage and paving: Bridge is closed and will remain closed for the duration of the project. Detours are posted. Estimated completion date is December 2010.

WARREN COUNTY, SR-56 bridge replacement project (Beersheba St. Bridge) for construction of a concrete bulb-tee bridge over the Barren Fork River (LM 11.77) including grading, drainage and paving: There will be no long-term lane closures as a result of this project. The existing bridge will remain open until construction of a new adjacent structure. The contractor may have intermittent short-term lane closures to move equipment. Flaggers will be present to assist with traffic control. Estimated completion date is September 2011.

WHITE COUNTY, Fancher Mill Road construction of concrete I-beam bridge over Taylor Creek (LM 0.19): (Recovery Act Project) The road will be closed for the duration of the project. Detours are posted. Estimated completion date is September 2010.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution and obey reduced speed limits in all TDOT work zones, regardless of lane closure activity.

Mark Phillips Was Victim In Fatal Hixson Pike Wreck

Mark Phillips, 54, was the victim in a fatal Hixson Pike wreck on Saturday afternoon. Police said the driver of the Ford F150 that went out of control and struck the Phillips vehicle was 68-year-old Warren Elliott.
