Great Southern Old-Time Fiddlers' Convention Is Saturday

Friday, March 19, 2010

Lindsay Street Hall will be the scene for the revival of the Great Southern Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention on Saturday at 3 p.m. The first Chattanooga Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention was held here in 1925. By 1930, all the big names in fiddle and string band music had come here to take part in the event.

The Chattanooga Valley will once again ring with the sounds of the old time fiddle and banjo music as they bring back the Great Southern Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention.

Contests will be held with cash prizes awarded in the following old time categories – fiddle, banjo, dance and string band. Several fiddlers and string bands will perform throughout the day, including Citico, Matt Kinman, Mick Kinney and the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers. Food and drinks will be available.

The Great Southern Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention will be an event where people can come and celebrate the old time fiddle music of our region. It is the goal of the convention to be a gathering place for traditional musicians, those who enjoy listening to the music and the Chattanooga community as a whole.

Sponsors for this event include Moon Pie, The Choo Choo, Dust-to-Digital, the Lyndhurst Foundation, Rock City, Fletcher Bright and the Tennessee Aquarium. Beverages provided by Big River Brewery and Carter Distributing. Food provided by Champy’s Chicken, Good Dogs and Big River.

This is a family friendly event with $5 admission and kids under 12 are free. For more information call 755-9111.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
