Milligan Drops Scots Record To Five-Hundred With 3 Game Sweep

Monday, March 22, 2010

This weekend proved to be a tough one for the Covenant College baseball team, as it lost all three of its home games to Milligan College to fall to 7-7 on the season. A 3-1 defeat on Friday, followed by 10-0 and 3-1 losses in Saturday's doubleheader, condemned the Scots to four straight losses after a 7-3 start to the season. Wes McDowell opened Friday's game on the mound for the Scots, striking out three batters without giving up a run until a 6th inning home run left Covenant in a 1-0 hole. Brian Simons then entered the game to pitch and closed out the 6th to keep the score at 1-0, and allow Covenant to reply in the 7th inning with a Jared Carlson game-tying double. Simons continued to pitch for the remainder of the game, and performed solidly until giving up two runs in the top of the 9th. A Covenant strikeout, pop out, and ground out in the bottom of the ninth, then left the Scots holding a 3-1 loss headed into Saturday's doubleheader.

Saturday's first game proved to be the least memorable for the Scots on the weekend, as the 10 run rule forced the game to end after just six innings. Starting pitcher Demarius Johnson was pulled in the fifth after surrendering four runs, and replaced by Jacob Hutcherson. Hutcherson, though, would not fare much better, lasting only a few pitches before Robert Willett came in after an errant Hutcherson pitch hit Milligan batter Brett Maddox. In the bottom of the 6th, despite a Taylor Oldham single, Covenant was unable to score, and surrendered game two at a 10-0 scoreline.

Bookending Friday evening's 3-1 loss was yet another 3-1 defeat, but this match was not without a solid performance by starting pitcher Andre Glover, who lasted the entire seven innings while surrendering only 3 runs. Glover struck out 4 batters en-route to allowing only one run in the fifth inning and two in the final seventh inning, but a few unlucky breaks, coupled with an inability to convert hits into runs, doomed the Scots to a Milligan sweep of the series. Jonathan Carter's double led to the Scots only run in game three, and after the series defeat, Covenant will now travel to Atlanta Christian on Tuesday in hopes of returning to winning form.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
