EPB held a banquet to honor the winning students of their sixth annual Black History Month Essay Contest on Thursday. A celebration of diversity and education presided over by EPB President and CEO Harold DePriest and Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey, the event recognized nine top essays chosen from more than 70 submitted by public and private middle and high school students within EPB's service area.
Participating students were asked to write an essay which focused on contributions of African Americans throughout history.
The winners of the 2010 EPB Black History Month Essay Contest are:
Grades 6 and 7
1st Place, Jonathan Sanders of Silverdale Baptist Academy
2nd Place, Dan Harper of McCallie Middle
3rd Place, Katrina Mauldin-Raley of Silverdale Baptist Academy
Grades 8 and 9
1st Place, Nikki Davis of Grace Baptist Academy
2nd Place, Jake Simpson of Grace Baptist Academy
3rd Place, Madison Leonard of Grace Baptist Academy
Grades 10 through 12
1st Place, Adriane Gutillo of Soddy Daisy
2nd Place, Seth Atchley of Soddy Daisy
3rd Place, Matthew Masters of Soddy Daisy
All winners were awarded cash prizes, as well as certificates and medals. Teachers of first place winners received gift cards to be used towards school supplies.
