The United House Of Prayer plans to build two new parsonages across from its church home in East Lake.
Apostle C.L. Weathers said an older two-story home will be torn down to make way for two new all-brick homes to be occupied by church pastors.
Rev. Weathers said the United House Of Prayer has carried out a complete renovation of the former East Lake Baptist Church at Dodds Avenue and 12th Avenue.
He said that was once one of the leading local churches, but it eventually closed and the property was for sale for 10 years.
He said the United House Of Prayer bought it and renovated over 47,000 square feet, including adding a new roof.
A rezoning for the project was recommended for approval by the Planning Commission.
Vance Travis, an architect who serves on the panel, recommended that the church look into renovating the old house, calling it a "striking" building.
Apostle Weathers said engineers have told church officials the house has settled and it might fall it if attempts are made to renovate it.
