(Starkville, MS) - The six-hour ride back from Starkville, Mississippi this weekend had to be an easy one as Georgia Northwestern's Lady Mustangs continued its march thru the SEC volleyball club schedule in winning fashion as tournament action was held at the Mississippi State University Sandersville Center.

The two-year volleyball power had success in its last SEC event behind the big hitters on their front line; dropping names like the University of Tennessee at the Vanderbilt Commodore Classic. This time, it would be setters Katie White and Allison Robinson. White, a sophomore setter from LaFayette, and Robinson, a freshman setter from Gordon Central, who would set the tone at the Mississippi State Bulldog Invitational Volleyball Club Event.

The 5-foot-3 White would dish out 43 assists and serve 11 aces through the quarterfinals, semi-finals, and final match. At 5-foot-6, Robinson made save after save on the Starkville hardwood racking up 42 digs for the same three rounds of play. Northwest Whitfield alum, Jesse Parsons delivered 14 kills and nine blocks for the event.

"We have a strong mix of players from across the region," said Georgia Northwestern Head Women's Volleyball Coach, Tricia Goodwin. "Our hitters and setters are really starting to click."

Among the wins was another big SEC name as the Lady Mustangs stopped the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs Volleyball Club, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 25-17. Successful play by Georgia Northwestern landed them in the finals against the University of Mississippi at Tupelo Volleyball Club. The best of three championship format consisted of a pair of close contests of which the Lady Mustangs came out on the wrong end falling, 21-25, 23-25.

"Billy (Newcom, assistant coach) and I couldn’t be more proud of the work they are producing," said Goodwin. "We have huge players from Gordon, Polk, Walker, Catoosa, Whitfield, and Hamilton County. It's a big mix we have had to work with. But it's the right mix. These student-athletes are doing a phenomenal job at the right time. All of this pressure, plus they have Winter Quarter finals coming up."

Georgia Northwestern hosts fellow TCSGAA opponent, West Georgia Tech at LaFayette High School this Saturday at 1 p.m. This Saturday's match is a warm-up for a trip to Athens, Georgia as the Lady Mustangs take part in the University of Georgia Volleyball Club Invitational on March 20.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
