The Alexian Brothers Senior Neighbors Leadership Academy held a “Media Relations Day” to learn more about public relations and the media. The Senior Leadership Academy, which is made up of local senior volunteers, visited the Chattanooga Times Free Press, WTVC Channel 9, and made quick stop at the Chattanooga Zoo. The day-long workshop was led by Robin Derryberry of Derryberry Public Relations.

The Senior Leadership Academy cultivates the skills and enthusiasm of adults over 50 years of age and helps them develop into more effective community leaders. The program serves to familiarize participants with the Chattanooga community, provides opportunities to meet with community leaders and helps participants learn how to use their insight and expertise to the greater good of the community.

Building on participant’s experiences and skills, the Senior Leadership Academy explores ways to resolve community issues and make Chattanooga a better place to live through volunteer service.

Over a nine-month curriculum, the Senior Leadership Academy provides participants the opportunity to witness Chattanooga’s world-renowned community development and philanthropy firsthand through presentations, panel discussions, hands-on experiences and field trips. The 2009-2010 class is the 6th class of the Senior Leadership Academy.

Monthly topics and field trips include:
Leadership Skills
Community Development
Education
Arts & Culture
Justice System
Philanthropy
Health & Wellness
Media Relations

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.   We found ... (click for more)
