Eight fire companies from the Chattanooga Fire Department worked to save a two-story house in the Highland Park area Thursday night.
Two firefighters were treated by medics with Hamilton County EMS for heat exhaustion. One of them was later transported to Parkridge Medical Center after complaining of chest pains. That firefighter was later treated and released.
The fire was reported around 8:30 p.m. at a house located at 1617 E. 14th St. Neighbors told firefighters that there was an explosion in the house strong enough to shake their homes a short distance away.
The Chattanooga Fire Department responded initially with four fire companies. Considering the hot and humid conditions, Battalion Chief Mike Knox called for two additional fire companies.
Captain Randy Steele said the fire seemed to be unusually hot. The firefighters had to use saws and other tools to cut into the walls and floor to get to the fire.
Because of the intense heat, some of the firefighters had to exit the house to take a break. While other firefighters took their place, Chief Knox called for two fire companies to get additional help for the firefighters on the scene.
The fire caused extensive damage to the house. Lieutenant Henry McElvain with the Fire Investigation Division said that he is looking into the reports of an explosion. He added that thunderstorms had also passed through the area earlier. Right now, the cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
The owner of the house said he was in the process of renovating it. Lt. McElvain said the loss is estimated at $150,000.
