Creative Discovery Museum will celebrate literacy and the true lives of Everyday Heroes each Saturday in August from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Heroes will share their own stories and read a story to help children better understand that heroes are special for many different reasons.
Children are encouraged to explore book shelves in the Museum’s Discovery Library, which is also offering selections from Hamilton County elementary schools’ summer reading lists.
“It is essential that kids realize everybody reads – especially those individuals we rely on to perform important jobs,” said Lu Lewis, the Museum’s early childhood educator and a recognized expert in the field of Early Childhood Development. “The purpose of these story times is to help kids grasp that reading is a skill you’ll use all your life and necessary to advance in any career. Our special guests are invited to bring their work manuals to help show children that reading is an essential skill for them to be real-life heroes.”
The Everyday Hero Story Time lineup includes:
Aug. 7: Pedro the Policeman. Museum guests will get the opportunity to check out Policeman Pedro’s motorcycle on the Museum Plaza, and then get to listen as Policeman Pedro reads a story at noon in the Museum’s Discovery Library.
Aug. 14: Fred the Fireman. Fred will drive his fire truck onto the Museum Plaza and talk with guests, then invite them to join him at noon for a story in the Museum’s Discovery Library.
Aug. 21: Lea the Librarian. Museum guests can visit with Lea and see Read 20’s Readmobile on the Museum Plaza, learn interesting facts about Lea’s role as Librarian, and then listen as she reads a story in the Museum’s Discovery Library at noon.
Aug. 28: Pat the Paramedic. Children and guests of the Museum will be wowed by the ambulance on the Museum’s Plaza and get to ask Pat about her heroic job as a paramedic. Pat will also share a story with guests in the Discovery Library.
In addition to the Story Time learning opportunities, Creative Discovery Museum encourages children to explore the many exciting book titles found in Discovery Library. The Museum’s Discovery Library is an official branch of the Chattanooga Centennial Library with books available for check-out year round to library members. Plus, the Discovery Library will be a resource for Hamilton County elementary school students to check-out books on their summer reading list.
Story Time and visits with the Everyday Heroes are free with paid admission to the Museum.
