City Parks And Recreation Department Upcoming Events & Activities

Here are the upcoming activities and events for the city's Parks and Recreation Department:

City-Wide:

Saturday, Aug. 7: “Dogs Across the Bridge” Dedication, 2 p.m. at South Entrance of Walnut Street Bridge (between the Holmberg Bridge and the “High Paw” Sculpture) “DOGood- Citizens for A Dog Friendly Chattanooga” will lead a parade across the Walnut Street Bridge
in celebration of getting it re-opened to "responsible" dog owners. The group has been working hard to promote good pet practices, serve as examples, involve numerous pet groups, and monitor areas already open to pet owners in the downtown. Following the bridge walk, there will be a “Yappy Hour” at Green Life Grocery from 4–6 p.m. Email: dogfriendlychattanooga@gmail.com

Saturday, Aug. 7: Swaggfest “Back to School” Teen Event at First Tennessee Pavilion, 6–11 p.m. Local talent showcase, popular national acts, resources for teens and families, positive focus as teens and young adults head back to school. Call 643-6081.

Saturday, Aug. 7, 14, 21, and 28: “Riverfront Nights” Concert Series at Ross’ Landing, 7 p.m. Free and open to the public. Program starts at 7 p.m. and is sponsored by Friends of the Festival. Recreation Related Activities:

Monday–Friday, Aug. 2-6: Folk Art Camp for ages 12 – 15 at Wyatt Art Annex
Visual art projects using recycled and traditional media. Guest artists, field trips, outdoor recreation, and Friday cook-out. Cost: $60.00 per child Call Tracy Wamp at 757-2593

Tuesday, Aug. 3: Annual National Night Out at several parks.
Neighborhood associations and communities have a walk, block party, or get-together to raise awareness for their roles in fighting crime.

Wednesday, Aug. 4: Therapeutic Rec. Program “Chillin” Adult Social Group Event
Young adults group for folks who have disabilities will go to a Chattanooga Lookouts Game. Call Elaine Adams at 697-1345.

Thursday, Aug. 5: EAC Memorial Auditorium Fund-raising campaign kick-off.
Activities, entertainment, troop support by local wives & families, displays and appearances by military V.I.P.s Call Melissa Turner at 425-7826.

Saturday, Aug. 7: South Chattanooga Rec. Center “Garden of Youth” Community Garden.
8 a.m. at the recreation center. Fun sustainability project for area youth. Volunteers needed! Call Montrell Besley at 425-3550.

Sunday, Aug. 8: Warner Park Pool closes, but "Spray & Play" is open through Labor Day. Visit www.chattanooga.gov/parks&recreation for “Spray & Play” water playground hours.

Outdoor Chattanooga & Related Activities:

Thursday, Aug. 5: Stringers Ridge Hike - 6 p.m.
Join Outdoor Chattanooga for a free, guided hike for an hour and a half of hiking at a leisurely pace. Singletrack trail, a few rocky sections, and a couple of good hills. Sturdy shoes are a must. Meet at Outdoor Chattanooga Center in Coolidge Park to car caravan to the trailhead. Rain or shine, but not in thunder and lightning storms. RSVP is appreciated. Call 423 643-6888.

Friday, Aug. 6: “Bike2Work” Bike Commuter’s Breakfast - 7-8:30 a.m.
“DOGood- Citizens for A Dog Friendly Chattanooga” will meet with the bicycle community to discuss dog walkers and bike riders on the Walnut Street Bridge. Call Philip Pugliese at 643-6887.

Saturday, Aug. 7: Greenway 5-Mile Trail Race at Greenway Farm - 9 a.m.
A great way for people of all ages to run on a moderate, scenic course and raise money for the Wilderness Trail Association. Co-sponsored by Outdoor Chattanooga & Rock/Creek Outfitters. Call 643-6889.

Volksnhundz Walks Every Saturday at 8:30 a.m. “DOGood-Citizens for a Dog Friendly Chattanooga” weekly dog-friendly walks through downtown Chattanooga Sat. morning beginning at the Ross’ Landing Pier at 8:30 a.m. For more information, e-mail dogfriendlychattanooga@gmail.com.

Saturday, Aug. 14: Brainerd Optimist “Fishing Rodeo” 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
The Brainerd Optimist Club located at 745 Scruggs Road, Ringgold, Ga. and the City’s Therapeutic Rec. Program host annual event for families who have members with disabilities. Children, teens, and adults invited to participate in fun fishing tourney. Free lunch and prizes.

Tuesday, Aug. 17: Start of Computer Classes at S. Chattanooga Rec. Center
Instructor Thomas Finley will offer another three–week session of computer classes in basics for beginners.

Tuesday and Thursday, 10–11:30 a.m. at the rec. center’s computer lab. Cost: $50.00 per person.

Belk Hosts “Engagement Party” For Couples Thursday

Couples engaged to be married are invited to Belk stores on Thursday for a signature Engagement Party event that offers engaged couples a fun-filled evening with food, beverages, entertainment, and prizes. Fifty Nifty Tour Comes To Chattanooga Thursday

Minneapolis-based husband and wife photography duo, Jonny and Michelle Hoffner,  have begun a year-long adventure taking them to all 50 states in 50 weeks, the Fifty Nifty Tour.   The plan is to drive across the United States, photographing one wedding per state, per w eek, while donating $1,000 per wedding to the anti-human trafficking organization,  She Dances. ... Mother Of Man Charged With Killing Sgt. Chapin Given Prison Sentence Of 30 Years, 6 Months

The mother of the man charged with killing Chattanooga Police Sgt. Tim Chapin was sentenced Monday to serve 30 years and six months in federal prison.  Judge Sandy Mattice said the sentence for Kathleen Mathews, 57-year-old mother of Jesse Mathews, as a packed courtroom watched.  Ray Mathews, father of Jesse Mathews, must serve 20 years and 10 months. Michael Lamar Johnston Must Wait Almost Two More Months Before Learning Sentence

Sentencing for former Hamilton County paramedic Michael Lamar Johnston, who pleaded guilty in November to fondling a woman as his ambulance took her to a hospital, has been delayed until April 2.   He was scheduled to learn today whether he would be placed on probation or given diversion but, at the request of both prosecution and defense attorneys, the hearing was passed. ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt.
