Paddle Board Yoga Classes Now Being Offered In Chattanooga

Friday, August 27, 2010

Zuddhi Yoga founder and teacher Jessica Ewart, alongside co-teachers Maggie White and Lisa McBryde, will be leading local yogis in a Yoga On Water class on Saturdays at Joyful Yoga@Sunny Shore (one mile off Highway 58), beginning Saturday. There are three class times available each Saturday: 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 12:45-2 p.m., and 2:15-3:30 p.m.

Paddle boarding originated in the islands of Hawaii. The sport has seen a huge surge in popularity in the last few years. Zuddhi Yoga has teamed up with local board company, SUP Paddleboard, to offer outdoors enthusiasts a one of a kind yoga class.

Michael Phillips, owner of SUP Paddleboard, will offer the yoga students a brief demo on the boards before each class. He will also take time to make sure every student has the appropriate size board and paddle.

Participants will advance their yoga practice and improve their balance as they move through a 75-minute series of fun postures guided by a certified yoga teacher.

Classes are open to the public and cost $25 per person for one class or $20 if more than one class is purchased. Due to limited space, pre-registration and payment is required.

Call 423 413-0392 for more information.

The first class was held last week and garnered a warm reception in the Chattanooga community that resulted in an invitation to move the class to a perfect venue on the water.

“On Monday morning, I opened my email to find the most generous offer from a local yoga studio located on Waconda Bay,” said Jessica Ewart.

“Jayne Cagle (owner of Joyful Yoga) had heard through her husband, Ben, about what we were doing in the creek and they offered us access to their property and facilities at Sunny Shore. It’s a convenient drive and a beautiful setting. The water is cool, clean and will elevate the experience of this yoga class. It was not only a great opportunity, but an expression of kindness that we have seen over and over again in Chattanooga’s yoga community.”

Yoga On the Water students will get to try out their new digs on Saturday.

When asked what motivated her to share her waterfront space with the aquatic yogis, Ms. Cagle said, “I made the offer because my heart told me to contact Zuddhi Yoga. I teach a style of yoga that encourages living from the guidance of my heart. It just seems natural to me to embrace the opportunity to facilitate these classes for Chattanoogans. Where else can you attend yoga classes inside or out back in a peaceful, secluded bay surrounded by trees and all that the river offers.”

Founded in 2009 by Jessica Ewart to offer people in the Chattanooga community a variety of yoga classes at an affordable price, Zuddhi Yoga is constantly looking for ways to make yoga available and appealing to all. They research various forms and practices around the globe to bring Chattanoogans the very best and most engaging yogic experiences available.

From $5/donation-based classes to advanced group practices to philosophical gatherings to even Yoga On Water, they strive to offer every body a class tailored to their personal needs.

Roy Exum: Tennessee’s ‘Saint’ Turns 50

Back when I was in my late 20s, still really dumb but all eager to make a difference in the world, I got tangled up in a life-changing caper late one night. A close friend called and frantically asked if I knew anybody who had a private plane. She said a real sick child needed to get to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis  – it was desperate -- and the life-or-death ... (click for more)
