Three awards were given at the Distinguished Alumnus Awards at the All-Class Reunion of Chattanooga Valley High School on Saturday. The awards were presented to the three graduates of Chattanooga Valley who served as president of a college or university. Recipients were: Dr. Wallace Samuel Prescott, class of 1938, Dr. Daryl V. Gilley, class of 1965, Dr. Sherry Howard Hoppe, class of 1965.
Dr. Prescott served both Tennessee Tech in Cookeville and Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Gilley was president of West Georgia Technical College in LaGrange, Ga., and Dr. Hoppe served as president of both Roane State Community College and Austin Peay State University.
Dr. Hoppe was the first female president in Tennessee, and the first to move from a two year to a four year institution.
All educators were recognized at the event.
Dr. Gilley has retired and now resides in Chattanooga Valley; Dr. Hoppe is retired and living in Chattanooga. She is about to release a book based on her deceased husband Bobby Hoppe.
