Chuck Fleischmann, Republican 3rd District House candidate, told the Pachyderm Club on Monday that his first aim in Congress is "to say goodby to Nancy Pelosi as House leader."
Mr. Fleischmann said he believes Republicans will take control of the House in the upcoming election "and we have a good chance in the Senate."
He said with Congressman Zach Wamp leaving the House and the possibility that Rep. Lincoln Davis could lose to a Republican in the 4th District there would be no Republican serving on the powerful appropriations committee.
He said he is taking aim at gaining a seat on that panel.
Mr. Fleischmann said he is "100 percent for" the Second Amendment and gun rights and is against abortion.
He said he wants to work to try to repeal "Obamacare" and to try to tackle the deficit.
Asked about his religious beliefs, he said, "Brenda and I have a very strong Christian faith. My faith guides me every day."
He called the Cap and Trade Bill "insane."
Mr. Fleischmann said when he was a young lawyer his first trial was against attorney John Wolfe, the Democratic nominee. He said he won that case and the appeal "and now I want to defeat him a third time."
He called Mr. Wolfe "intellectually honest, but intellectually wrong."
He said at a recent meeting that Mr. Wolfe "was saying that Obama had not gone far enough in some of his policies. Members of the audience were stunned."
He was asked by local Tea Party leader Mark West if there was a problem with Republicans joining behind him after the "ugly" primary campaign.
Mr. Fleischmann said he is getting support from all quarters in the party. He said, "Everybody is welcome on Team Fleischmann."
