Two men have been kidnapped and placed in the trunks of their cars in separate incidents near the Walnut Street Bridge.
Police made several arrests and obtained confessions after tracing calls made from a cellphone taken from one of the men.
Mychael Chunn said he was leaving his job at the just-opened Buffalo Wild Wings on Market Street across from the Aquarium on Thursday around midnight when he noticed three black males following him up Second Street.
He said he felt they were "after him" so he started to walk faster. He said one of the men ran at him, causing him to drop down on the parking lot where his vehicle was parked at Second and Walnut.
The trio took Mr. Chunn's car keys and cellphone, then forced him inside the trunk of his green 1999 Chrysler LHS. They then drove around in the vehicle for several hours while he remained in the trunk.
They drove to his home and stole several items there. They then drove around several more hours with Mr. Chunn still in the trunk before going to a pawn shop and pawning some of his items.
The robbers later parked the vehicle and unlocked the trunk. They told him to count to 100 before getting out. He did as he was instructed.
Since he was not familiar with the area where they had parked his car, he drove back to Buffalo Wild Wings and called police.
Mr. Chunn was held for over 10 hours in the trunk of his car.
Detectives examined phone records from his cellphone and found that calls were placed to Twain Marquise Jackson, 20, of 711 Woodvale Ave. Jackson pawned items taken from Mr. Chunn at the Valu-Pawn on Brainerd Road the same day he was kidnapped.
Police said Jackson was brought in for questioning, and he admitted to pawning the items and led investigators to the three men involved in the kidnapping.
They were identified as Christopher Turner, 19, of 220 Booth Road; Richard Hunt, Jr., 17, and Jeffery McClendon, Jr., 19.
Police said Turner, Hunt and McClendon gave confessions to the Chunn kidnapping, and also confessed to another abduction/robbery and home invasion on Saturday.
Joseph Clark said he had just parked his car in a lot in the 300 block of High Street and was walking across the Holmberg Bridge near Hunter Museum headed to work. It was 5:35 a.m.
He said he heard someone running up behind him and he turned to see a black male pointing a small black handgun at him demanding that he get down. He said he complied, and he was ordered to empty his pockets.
A second black male ran up and grabbed his car keys, then retrieved his car. He was then placed in the trunk of his car. A third black male was now driving the vehicle.
Mr. Clark said he was asked numerous questions by the rear seat passenger, including where he lived and what he had in the house.
Mr. Clark said when he felt the car slowing, he lifted up the lid and jumped out though the car was still moving. He was able to escape his captors.
He ran all the way to the Salvation Army on McCallie Avenue and called the police from there. He had exited the trunk in the 1300 block of Orchard Knob Avenue.
Police said, "He sustained minor injuries in the jump for freedom and was terrified by the event."
Police said the trio proceeded to the residence of Mr. Clark on Tennessee Avenue in St. Elmo.
Detectives said they carried out a home invasion in a downstairs apartment. "These suspects were vicious in their attack and brutalized the two victims there as well as using handguns in the robbery and attack."
The defendants are due to appear in General Sessions Court on Sept. 7 at 8:30 a.m.
They face charges of aggravated kidnapping, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated kidnapping and conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery.
