Rocktoberfest German Celebration Returns To Rock City

Monday, August 09, 2010 - by Meagan Jolley

Rock City’s annual German festival Rocktoberfest is coming soon, every Saturday and Sunday in October from 12-5 p.m. Experience the German culture with authentic music, food, activities and fun. Hear bands from Nashville, Birmingham and Atlanta, as well as some of Chattanooga’s favorites: The Wurstbrats (a subgroup of Chattanooga’s Big Band Sweet Georgia Sound).

“It’s my favorite time of year at Rock City,” said Mike LaRoche, band leader of The Wurstbrats.

New to the event this year is a Kodak Gnome Photo Contest - where guests can bring their gnome from home, purchase a favorite from Rock City’s gift shop or spy their favorite already in the gardens and find the most unique photo op (G-rated only) along the Enchanted Trail.

Send photos to Meagan@rockruby.com and upload them to Rock City’s Facebook page during the first two weeks of Rocktoberfest for a chance to win a Kodak M-series camera.

"We are so excited about our 5th annual German celebration, Rocktoberfest,” said Kim Jackson, director of special events for Rock City. “Between live German music, polka lessons, kid’s activities and delicious food like bratwursts, Rosemary Potatoes and homemade sauerkraut, there is truly something for everyone here. So come on up the mountain and help us celebrate.”

Rock City Gardens is partnering once again with Scenic City Survivors (www.ScenicCitySurvivors.org) during the festival, in promotion of the pink “Survivor Birdhouse,” honoring breast cancer awareness month in October. These birdhouses are only offered from Sept. 18–Oct. 31, and there are only 200 available.(www.seerockcity.com/survivor)

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
