An East Ridge High School student collapsed and died at the school on Tuesday, Supt. Jim Scales said.
He said the student, Shanecia "Shay" Kelly, was involved in JROTC activities at the time of the collapse.
Dr. Scales said the student was taken to a local hospital, but could not be revived.
East Ridge Police said, "At approximately 3:20 p.m., East Ridge Fire/Rescue and Police responded to East Ridge High School located at 4320 Bennett Road in reference to a 17-year-old female student who had collapsed a short time after beginning physical training with the East Ridge High School JROTC.
"Firefighters and Police Officers arrived on the scene where CPR had already been started by coaches and staff at the field. Firefighters and Paramedics with Lifeguard EMS continued CPR while transporting the victim to Parkridge East Hospital.
"The victim was pronounced dead shortly after her arrival at the Hospital. The child's name is being withheld."
