Blood Assurance is issuing a plea for blood donations as the inventory levels have dropped to a critical level in the community.
Type O negative and A negative donations are particularly needed, in addition to an overall need for donations.
As of this afternoon, there are no units of O negative on the shelves at Blood Assurance.
"This is extremely alarming given that an accident victim can use more than 50 units of blood," said Linda Hisey, vice-president of marketing and public relations for Blood Assurance.
O negative is the universal blood type, given to patients in an emergency situation when his or her own blood type is unknown.
This is the first critical appeal issued by the regional blood center in 2010.
The upcoming Labor Day holiday is also a concern for Blood Assurance officials. With one less day to collect blood next week, the need for blood donors is extremely crucial in boosting the community blood supply.
According to Ms. Hisey, if the supply does not increase, Blood Assurance will consider keeping its doors open on Labor Day to accommodate donors who are able to give on Monday.
To be eligible to donate, you must be at least 17 years old (16 years old with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in good health. The process usually takes about 30 minutes and includes a complimentary snack and t-shirt. Donors are asked to drink plenty of fluids - avoiding caffeine - and eat a meal that is rich in iron prior to donating.
