Roy Edward Smith, 81, of Bradley County, died on Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010 at his home.
He was of the Baptist faith. He was a former member of the Flint Springs Ruritan Club. He was a Sixth District Bradley County Commissioner from Sept. 1, 1982 to Aug. 31, 2010. He was always actively discussing county business with his constituents. He was a former cattle farmer and school bus driver with Whitfield County Schools in Georgia.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Elva Higgins Smith; and brother, Jack Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Willodyne Smith of Cleveland; son, Van E. Smith and wife Renee of Dalton; grandchildren, Caleb, Noah and Anna Kate Smith, all of Dalton; brother, Ronald Smith of Monteagle; sister, Katherine Emerson of Cleveland; and special friends, Glenn Cantrell, Elmer Cartwright, Zane Harris, Howard Thompson, J. L. Coe and others.
Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Fike Funeral Home with Pastor Darey Kittle, Pastor Walley Varnell and his son, Pastor Van E. Smith officiating.
Interment will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. in Flint Springs Cemetery with Dewayne Hicks, Charles Hannah, David Hannah, John Bagby, Madison Stamey, Larry Massengil and Tom Rumba serving as pallbearers. Members of the Bradley County Commission will serve as honorary pallbearers. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
The family will receive friends from 2-6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 2 at the funeral home prior to the service.
