“It’s all good. It’s 10 o’clock on a Friday night and we’re 1-0 in the district.”
That’s how Boyd Buchanan Head Coach Grant Reynolds summed up his team’s 40-0 blanking of a scrappy Silverdale Baptist Academy opponent Friday night on the Seahawks’ home field. It was back to their winning ways as the Bucs bounced back from a home loss last week to Red Bank.
For Silverdale it was more of the same as they fell to 0-3 on the young season. Coach John Allen was without two of his stalwart starters as sophomore Reid Clements was out with an injury and offensive lineman Aaron Sterzik was sidelined with grade issues. To add to Coach Allen’s troubles, all-around athlete Wil Amos went down at half-time with a lower leg injury that had been bothering him since the opener at Gordon Lee.
The Bucs’ Chase Reed hit the trifecta with three trips into the end zone – one on a 72-yard return of the opening kick-off, one on a nine yard run and once on the receiving end of a Clayton Parker pass, one of three the junior quarterback threw on the evening.
Other scores for Boyd Buchanan happened on a John Hale reception of 20 yards; a John Cardwell plunge from the two yard line; and, an Andrew Tallent one yard pass reception from Parker. The halftime score saw the Bucs head into the locker room with a 33-0 lead.
Coach Reynolds was complimentary in his comments about both teams. “We saw some things in our game against Red Bank that we needed to correct. We corrected them, but also came out and played really hard and very physical.” He continued, “Silverdale is a very scrappy team, they didn’t let up and found some running room early in the second half.”
That running room was provided by Seahawk senior Ethan Shamblin who came on in relief of Amos. Shamblin rambled for 56 yards on eight carries as he managed to do what other Silverdale backs had failed to do – run it up the middle.
But it was Reed who was the back of the evening in this contest. In addition to his three touches, the 5’9” junior ran for 44 yards on nine carries along with his 72 yard dash with the opening kick-off. Coach Reynolds said of Reed, “He’s a great kid with a lot of God-given talent. He made a lot of opportunities for us tonight.”
Boyd Buchanan rolled up 332 total yards to the Seahawks’ 150. The Bucs were fairly balanced with 198 rushing yards along with 134 via the air.
There was a lot of laundry on the field tonight, as well, with the two teams combining for 20 penalties for 205 yards. At one point the Bucs found themselves with a first and 10 at the Silverdale 24. Three plays later they were first and 40 from the Seahawk 46.
The now 2-1 (1-0) Bucs will return home next Friday night to face the Hustlin’ Tigers of Howard, 19-6 winners over Central. Silverdale (0-3, 0-2) heads to East Ridge to face the Pioneers, 41-14 losers to Red Bank.
