ROME, Ga. -- Baylor's Lady Red Raiders finished as the runner-up in the prestigious Berry Invitational cross country meet here Saturday morning with 166 points.
Atlanta Brookwood was the winner with 144 points.
Grace Tinkey of First Presbyterian Church Day School was the overall winner in 17:57 while Baylor senior Tenley Godfrey had a great race to finish second in 18:49.
Baylor was running without the services of top-runner Hannah Jumper, who is in Slovenia awaiting Sunday's World Mountain Running Championships.
"Tenley really busted it today," said Baylor coach Heather Ott late Saturday afternoon.
"It was truly a breakthrough race for her as it was the first time she'd broken 19 minutes in a 5K cross country race. She went out hard from the start and ran that way the entire time.
"The goal for our team was to run in a pack, but with 381 runners, that was almost impossible. We lost contact with each other at times, but they still had a great race.
"Rachel (Greenwall) had a great finish as she passed a bunch of folks in the final quarter mile. We always stress how important each person's finish is and that was certainly the case for her.
"Overall, it was a very satisfying performance for our team," Ott added.
While Brookwood and Baylor were first and second, Harrison was a close third with 174 points. Birmingham's Mountain Brook was fourth.
Godfrey was the leader for the Baylor girls.
Becca Greenwall was 24th in 20:19 while Sarah Hencke was 29th in 20:28.
Ruthie Townsend was 36th in 20:40 followed by Haley Chandler (75th in 21:14), Rachel Greenwall (96th in 21:34) and Caitlin Duggan (105th in 21:45).
Johanna Gartman was the runner-up in 19:25 as GPS finished seventh out of 16 teams in the small-school division.
Christian Bryant was the next Bruiser as she claimed 38th in 22:42 while Lucy Whitfield was 41st in 23:00 and Mary Portera 49th in 23:24.
Other GPS finishers included Corbin Cullum (50th in 23:28), Courtney Edens (54th in 23:35), Lauren Jackson (56th in 23:45), Maddie Ward (105th in 25:32), Raven Broom (110th in 25:53) and Maddie Bratcher (128th in 26:49).
Baylor's runner-up finish was an improvement from last year when they finished fifth.
