LONDON, Ky. - Crooked Creek Golf Course continues to be a favorite spot for coach John Maupin and his Lee Flames. With a Friday victory, Maupin is 3-0 at the Kentucky links and former coach Jack Souther won his share before retiring.
With freshman Hunter Vest (70) and sophomore JB Eksteen (71) leading the charge, the Flames claimed the championship of the University of Cumberlands Bill Sergent Invitational by posting an 1-under par 287, finishing the 36-hole event at 584 an defeating second-place Lindsey-Wilson (592), by eight strokes. Vest and Eksteen totaled 143 and missed tying for medalist honors by one stroke. However, both earned spots on the all-tournament team.
Sophomore Tyler Smith (71) improved his score by six strokes and had a 36-hole total of 148. Matt Emery (78) slipped to a 153, Sam Bedwell rebounded with a 75 and also carded a 153. Brad Gardner, playing with a group of individuals, was consistent with two rounds of 75 and a 150 finish.
"I was pleased with our play today," said coach Maupin. "The course played tougher, but our guys got off to a fast start and put the pressure on the rest of the field. I was happy we were able to keep our streak alive against a solid 14-team field. We still have a lot of areas of our game to work on."
The Flames will have time to work on their game. They will not return to tournament action until Oct. 4 when they travel to Rome,Ga. for the annual Berry tournament.
