Alumni Events Bring Music, Vol Pride To Chattanooga

Tuesday, September 07, 2010

The University of Tennessee Pride of the Southland Marching Band is making a stop in Chattanooga to entertain Vol fans en route to Athens when the Vols take on the University of Georgia Bulldogs. The event will be held on Friday, Oct. 8, at noon at Miller Park.

Sponsored by the Hamilton County UT Alumni Chapter and organizer Roger Woody, the annual event is free and open to the public.

“Chattanooga is home to many band members—and we’re proud to welcome them and the entire band to the Scenic City,” said Rachel Nall, Hamilton County UT Chapter president. “The event is perfect for families—or if you are on your lunch break. The alumni association hopes to gather a large crowd to show our support for the University of Tennessee.”

The fun continues on Sunday, Oct. 10, at 5 p.m. when Wendel Werner brings his “History of Rock-N-Roll” presentation to Chattanooga—complete with details of how Chattanooga’s own music scene helped to shape music as we know it. Mr. Werner is the former instructor of the History of Rock-N-Roll course at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. In addition, Mr. Werner is the director of the UT Singers as well as an accomplished composer and proponent of jazz. Because Mr. Werner no longer teaches the class, this presentation marks a special opportunity to celebrate the history of rock-n-roll.

“Wendel’s class was my very first at UTK,” Ms. Nall said. “He is a thrilling speaker, full of energy, laughter and love for music—his presentation is not to be missed.”

The event is held at the Loose Cannon Gallery, located at 1800A Rossville Ave. Tickets are $22 for adults and include a cash bar, hors d’oeuvres and presentation. For more information or tickets, visit http://historyofrock.eventbrite.com.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
