For the first time since May 30, the Braves aren't in first place.

Major League Standings

The Braves are struggling offensively on this road trip, and a quick glance at the stat sheet reveals why. Atlanta is hitting only .135 (5-for-37) with runners in scoring position over the past five games. During that span, the Braves have left 42 runners on base. The Braves stranded 11 runners on Monday and another six on Tuesday. In Tuesday's loss, the Braves mustered just five hits, with only two of the extra-base variety.

When they take field on Wednesday for the finale against the Bucs, they'll be trying to regain their position at the top of the National League East.

This is not the first time the Phillies have come from behind to make a run for the playoffs. Phillies surge into first place

It's been a rough road trip for Atlanta, which fell to 1-4 after Tuesday's loss in Pittsburgh. But in the Braves' eyes, nothing has changed. They remain confident in their squad and their abilities down the stretch. In short, Atlanta isn't panicking.

Braves quotes after Tuesday's loss

The story for the Braves on Wednesday will be starter Derek Lowe. Lowe has battled elbow pain for the last few weeks and missed his last start. Doctors confirmed he has a bone chip in his elbow, but for now, the veteran will attempt to pitch through it.

Treatment and a cortisone shot have allowed the right-hander's elbow to calm down in preparation for his start on Wednesday. After two bullpen sessions, Lowe remains optimistic that he can be effective, even with some pain.

Lowe's ability to bounce back and make it through the season could be key for the Braves as they try to claw out a division title in manager Bobby Cox's last season.

Thoughts On The Mathews Sentencing

It is not by coincidence I haven’t submitted an opinion piece in some time to the Chattanoogan.  The topics I cover are generally vitriolic in regards to local political decisions and their makers regarding public safety and I do not wish to associate my name with more noble subjects such as that of the heroic death and cowardly murder of Chattanooga Police Sergeant Tim Chapin, ... Thank You, Judge Mattice And Chattanooga

I would like to thank Judge Mattice for handing down a 30.5 year sentence for Kathleen Mathews.  Obviously, no amount of jail time, fines, or lashings can bring back Tim Chapin.   A 30-year sentence will, however, make the world just a little safer.  That's what Sgt. Chapin would have wanted.  He was a protector and sacrificed his life so the rest of ... (click for more)
