The Folk School of Chattanooga is offering 24 classes, taught by 13 different instructor/musicians at their location on Forest Avenue, just one block up from Frazier in North Chattanooga.
The eight-week semester includes classes for beginners, intermediate players, advanced students, and classes for kids.
Jim Pankey will lead the first Ukulele Ensemble class, where players of all experience levels (even rank beginners) will have fun with a wide variety of repertoire. The Folk School has ukuleles for sale starting at $40.
Ed Huey, formerly a teacher at Baylor, is teaching two harmonica classes. Harmonica 1, like the Ukulele Ensemble, provides an easy point of entry into the musical world for someone who’s taking up an instrument for the first time.
Other ensemble classes include a Gospel Singing class, a 1960s Folk Rock Ensemble, and an Irish Traditional Music Ensemble. There are also classes for instruments such as upright bass, dobro, guitar, Irish flute, dulcimer, fiddle, banjo, and mandolin.
Folk School of Chattanooga Director Christie Burns said, “It’s amazing what talent and musical diversity our instructors bring to the Folk School. You can learn a lot about music by just standing in this building and listening to all the classes and lessons going on around you.”
“These eight-week semesters are really fun because so many people come here with their instruments. We get to make new friends, and everyone makes a lot of music together.”
The Folk School of Chattanooga is a non-profit music school specializing in American roots and traditional music. Fall classes start Sept. 20. Classes meet once a week for an hour and fifteen minutes. $140 is the participation fee for an eight-week class.
