About 100 public libraries across Tennessee will soon be sharing an online library catalog, courtesy of the Tennessee State Library and Archives.

TSLA has purchased the new electronic product, which makes it easier for libraries to use state-of-the-art computer technology to share resources. While most libraries have had individual systems of this type for years, the shared system brings many advantages, officials said.

Participating libraries will have the option of making their inventories of materials available over the Internet, which will allow patrons to reserve books online or request that neighboring libraries ship books to their local libraries for check out. Patrons can also save their reading and viewing preferences into confidential profiles, so that the system will notify them when titles they may be interested in go on the shelves at their libraries.

The libraries will be reducing their costs by sharing the web-based service known as Agent Verso, a product of Auto-Graphics, Inc. The system will also save library staff members time because records will be automatically updated electronically and cataloging details about materials available at more than one library only need to be entered into the system once.

“The electronic card catalog is another example of how we can use technology to deliver better service to Tennesseans more efficiently and cost effectively,” Secretary of State Tre Hargett said. “This service should make life better for patrons and library staff. It is the type of service that TSLA should be providing to libraries across our state.”

“One of the great things about this integrated library system is that it will increase the resources available at community libraries throughout Tennessee,” State Librarian and Archivist Chuck Sherrill said. “Patrons can use online ordering to get access to books and movies that otherwise might not be available at their local libraries. Staff can access up-to-the-minute details about what is on the shelf and what may be on hold for another user.”

The TSLA is a division of the Office of the Secretary of State. TSLA is the state’s primary repository of books and records of historical, documentary and reference value. Those resources are available at the State Library and Archives building in Nashville or online at tn.gov/tsla.
