Winter Workshop: Eat the Weeds in Your Own Back Yard, Jan. 26
Learn about edible plants that grow in your own back yard during our third Winter Workshop on Thurs., Jan. 26, 6 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. in Coolidge Park. Herbalist Holli Richie will guide participants through a menu of weeds and even offer some taste samples. The workshop is free and open to the public. Winter Workshop: Building a Bat House Feb. 2
A single small bat can eat as many as 1,200 mosquitoes in one night. At our next Winter Workshop, former TWRA wildlife officer Mike Bailey will share plans and tips for building bat houses. Learn about these often misunderstood mammals and how you can attract them to your back yard. The class happens on Thurs., Feb. 2, 6 p.m. at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. in Coolidge Park. Outdoor Chattanooga Bicycle Safety Classes, 2012
Outdoor Chattanooga and the League of American Bicyclists will offer several bicycle safety classes this winter and spring, from short, free seminars and a traffic skills class to an intensive cycling instructor workshop. Sign up now.

Register for the Volunteer Canoe and Kayak Races
The inaugural running of the Volunteer Canoe and Kayak Races will happen on Apr. 28, beginning in Knoxville. Registration is now open for 80, 48, 26 and five mile races. The 80 mile course will run on the Tennessee and Little Tennessee Rivers and take racers from downtown Knoxville to Chilhowee Dam at the base of the Smoky Mtns. Online registration is now open for all races.

Soddy-Daisy TTA Hikes in February

The Gear Closet Now Accepting Used Outdoor Gear for TenneSEA
Bring your used outdoor gear and clothing to Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. and support the Tennessee Student Environmental Alliance and their efforts to educate about clean water. TenneSEA’s Gear Closet will open at the Outdoor Expo and Gear Swap on Sat., Apr. 21. Donation stations are also located on Signal Mtn., and in Hixson and on Brainerd Rd. LPRF Grant Workshops Statewide on Feb. 13
The TN Dept. of Environment and Conservation is now accepting applications for Local Parks and Recreation Fund grants to help communities improve green spaces, develop trails and do capital projects in parks, natural areas and on greenways. TDEC will host a series of workshops throughout the state on Mon., Feb. 13, in Nashville, Knoxville and Jackson, TN to help communities understand the application process. LPRF grants require a 50 percent match, with a maximum possible award of $250,000. By statute, at least 60 percent of the funds allocated for these grants will be awarded to municipal governments. 2012 TN Bike Summit Coming to Chattanooga May 2-4
The 2012 Tn. Bike Summit will come to Chattanooga Wed.- Fri., May 2-4. In just one year, Tennessee rose from a low ranking of 43 to number 24 of the League of American Bicyclists Bicycle Friendly State list. Statewide, communities have implemented innovative bicycle infrastructure, programs, and legislation designed to promote safe, active transportation. To continue building this momentum, the 2012 Tennessee Bike Summit will serve as an opportunity for planners, engineers, researchers, and elected officials across the state to share successes, challenges, and strategies for moving Tennessee forward as a bike-friendly state. New Hunting And Fishing Licenses Now On Sale

The 2012-13 Tennessee hunting and fishing licenses are now on sale. Licenses are available at Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency regional offices, license agents and on the TWRA website, www.tnwildlife.org . The new licenses annually go on sale each Feb. 18. Comment Period Deadline Approaching For 2012-23 Hunting Regulations

The deadline is approaching to submit comments concerning the 2012-13 hunting season regulations to the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency. The comment period is open until Friday, Feb. 24. Chattanooga Airport’s New Corporate Flight Center Is First Aviation Terminal In The World To Be LEED Platinum Certified

The Chattanooga Airport’s new energy-efficient 9,000-square-foot corporate flight center (FBO) terminal facility has been awarded platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certification program. 2,948 Cast Ballots In First 5 Days Of Early Voting

Election officials said 2,948 early votes have been cast in Hamilton County after five days of early voting. Next Tuesday is the final day of early voting prior to the March 6 presidential preference balloting. Northgate Mall is the most popular location with 1,239 ballots cast there.
