Baylor Golf Teams Lead D-II AA State

McCallie, Ensworth Girls in Second

MANCHESTER - The last time Baylor led the D-II boys and girls state golf championship after Day 1 was 2008 and the Red Raiders went on to claim both state crowns.

Monday at WillowBrook Golf Club, the two Red Raider teams were back in first place together.

Day 2 Tee Times: First foursomes tee off on No.1 and No.10 at 8 a.m. CDT.  All pairings, times and Day 1 results are on tssaa.org.

The Baylor boys lead two-time defending champion McCallie by 13 strokes (291-304), with Memphis University School in third (306) in the six-team field.

The Baylor girls have a three-shot advantage over defending champion Ensworth, 146-149, with St. Agnes in third (161) in the six-team field.

Baylor has won a combined 31 state golf titles, girls (16 straight, 1995-2010) and boys (15, the first one coming in 1988).

In D-II A division, Knox. Webb leads the boys’ tournament, while Franklin Road Academy is the leader on the girls’ side.

D-II AA Boys:

Led by Blake Maum’s 4-under, 68 (32-36), Baylor is in first place  (13 shots) over second place McCallie and  MUS in third.

Maum is the Day 1 leader with Zach Olsen (72, MUS) in second.

McCallie’s Tucker Snipes and Andrew Weathers are tied for fifth with 74s.

This is the rubber match between the two Chattanooga teams as Baylor won the Baylor Preview and the City Prep, while McCallie won the dual match and the East/Middle Region.

First Day Leader: In the last 10 years (2002-20011), the Day 1 leader has gone on to win the state title seven times. Baylor was Day 1 leader four of those times (2003-06-07-08) and won all four years.

McCallie was Day 1 leader in 2010 and won it, while in 2011 the Blue Tornado led after Day 1 but rain and darkness cancelled Day 2 (the round was started, but not completed) and McCallie was declared the winner based on Day 1 scores.

In 2009, Brentwood Academy led wire to wire.

Rally To Win: In the three years since 2001 that a team came from behind to win, Baylor accomplished the feat, twice (2004, 2005) and McCallie once (2002).

In 2005, Knox Webb led Baylor, 290-291, and the Red Raiders won the team crown in a one-hole playoff. Current pro golfer Harris English was state medalist (135) for Baylor.

In 2004, Memphis University School led Baylor by nine strokes (300-309) only to see the Red Raiders rally to win by two, 600-602.

In 2002, defending champion Baylor and MUS were tied for the lead (309) with McCallie one shot back in third. McCallie won by five shots over runner-up Baylor, 609-614. Current pro golfer Luke List took medalist honors (144) for Baylor.

D-II AA Girls

Baylor’s Blakesly Warren is the top Red Raider (72) and tied for second overall. teammate Lauren Johnson shot 74.

Defending champion Alexandra Farnsworth (Ensworth) took Day 1 medalist honors with a 33-38-71, while Lauren Wade (Briarcrest) is tied with Warren for second.

In 2011, Baylor and Ensworth were tied after Day 1, with Ensworth winning by two, 312-314 to end the Red Raiders 16-year reign as champions.

This is the third straight year that Baylor and Ensworth have battled for the title.

2011: The two teams were tied after Day 1 with Ensworth winning the team championship, 312-314

2010: Baylor led by three, 154-157, after Day 1 and won its national-record tying 16th  straight state crown by three, 310-313.
