The days of "Oreo" the pgymy goat living peaceably at the dead end of Springvale Road may be coming to a close.

The East Ridge Council on Thursday night voted down an ordinance that would have made an exception for pgymy goats in the city regulations banning certain farm animals from city living.

The ordinance had been tabled.

Councilman Jim Bethune moved to take it off the table and that was approved.

Then he and Council members Denny Manning and Darwin Branam voted to deny. Mayor Brent Lambert was the only voice in favor of the goat. Vice Mayor Larry Sewell was absent.

Jeffery Viar in August had made a plea to city officials to let him keep his chidrens' pet pygmy goat.

He said his two children raised "Oreo" since he was a baby and keep him in a fenced-in yard at the end of the road.

"He's not bothering nobody and I'm just here because of my kids," he told City Council members.

Mr. Viar said neighbors are also fond of "Oreo" and neighborhood children feed him through the fence. He said several neighbors had voluteered to accompany him to the council meeting to speak in favor of "Oreo."

With the vote, the Vlars are expected to leave East Ridge.

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?
