East Ridge Pioneers 12s And 8s Finish Undefeated

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

The East Ridge Pioneers 12s and 8s completed the 2012 Scenic City Youth Football League regular season undefeated and will both be the No. 1 seeds when the playoffs start on Saturday.

Mike Long’s Pioneers 8s defeated the Boynton Falcons 25-0 to extend the two-time SCYFL Super Bowl champions winning streak to 30 games.

“Carson Yates and Jakobe Thomas came out firing,” Long said. “Yates connected on a halfback pass to Thomas for a 49-yard touchdown to go up 6-0. Then it took just eight plays for the offense to put the game away midway through the second quarter.

Yates finished the day with six carries for 175 yards and Thomas had two carries for 32 yards.

Yates also completed a 25-yard pass to Mason Long.

“Our defense was lights out all day,” Long said. “We gave up only one first down.”

Long saluted Kye Songer who recorded nine tackles and two sacks as the defensive standout.  Brody Swader, Thomas and Long were also lauded for their defensive efforts.

The Pioneers 12s defeated the newly-combined Dayton team 27-0. The Dayton White team and Green team recently merged to finish the season.

Stephon Walker was again the top performer for the Pioneers 12s with scoring runs of 38, 45 and 60 yards.

“We also had strong runs from Blake Wright, Corey Chitwood and Kamron Holcomb,” said Coach Kevin Wright. “In addition we had outstanding defensive efforts from Jonathon Jofre, Eric Bennett, James Parks, Dennis Freeman, Christopher Humphries and Will Wooten.”

The East Ridge Mustangs 12s finished the regular season with a 5-1 record and the No. 2 seed with a 42-14 victory over the Harrison Pounders at Central.

“I was impressed, the Harrison coaches all had on pink golf shirts and the players wore high pink socks to support Breast Cancer awareness,” said Mustangs coach Stump Martin. “Harrison even had a band that brought them on the field and then went to the stands and played on and on and on. They were fired up.”

The Mustangs DeVonte Tipton returned to the backfield fulltime after recovering from a broken elbow suffered the first day in pads back in early August.

Playing without the services of standout running back Jordan Hughley, Tipton rushed for 158 yards on 12 carries, including TD runs of 68, 56 and 49 yards.

Riley Harrison had a good day running the football with more than 50 yards rushing and a TD run of 26 yards.

Brody Campbell also returned to the backfield for the first time since an early August knee injury to score on a 12-yard run. Campbell was a defensive standout with three tackles for a loss.

Jordan Sims picked off a pass and returned it 58 yards for a TD and Bucky Williams had an interception.

Michael “Tika” Ricketts was a defensive standout, along with Ta Darrell Hodge and Shawn Hall.

Hall had two sacks and recovered a fumble.

The East Ridge Pioneers 10s lost 25-0 to Lookout Valley.

Cole Rizzo carried the ball 15 times for more than 100 yards and teamed with Alex Monterada as the defensive standouts for East Ridge.

The East Ridge 7s fumbled the ball twice in the red zone to lose a 13-7 heartbreaker to Lookout Valley.

Jaylon Moore scored the only East Ridge touchdown.

The East Ridge Pioneers 6s lost to the Harrison Pounders 19-13.

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
