Soddy Daisy Soccer Blanks Ooltewah

District 5-AAA Champs

Friday, October 19, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

Soddy Daisy and Ooltewah have combined to win the last 14 district girls soccer titles - prior to Thursday's District 5-AAA final -  so it was appropriate that the two teams battle for the 2012 crown as well.

Soddy Daisy senior Summer Lanter scored three goals and three assists, while teammate Miranda Smith added a pair of goals and an assist as the host Trojans defeated the No.3 seeded Owls, 7-0.

The Trojans (15-2-3) scored three times in the first 13 minutes and held that lead until halftime.

"We used an up-tempo type attack with accurate passes and moved the ball well," said Soddy Daisy coach Moises Drumond.

Miranda Smith scored the first goal in the second minute of play, quickly followed by Natalie Smith (8th minute) and Lanter (13th minute).

The victors - who have won 41 straight district matches dating back toi 2007 - added an additional four goals in the second half as goalkeepers Baylee Burk and Sydney Burton combined for the seventh shutout of the season.

Natalie Smith and Megan Weller also scored goals for Soddy Daisy.

District Championships: Soddy Daisy has now won six straight district titles (2007-2012) as well as four straight from 1998-2001, while Ooltewah had a five-year run, 2002-06.

Next Match: Tues. Oct. 23 - Region 3 Semis

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
