MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- While Wednesday was a pretty successful for Chattanooga teams playing in the State volleyball tournament, it was a totally different story on Thursday.

The Boyd-Buchanan Lady Buccaneers were  the only Chattanooga team who won on the second day, but oh, what a big win it was.  For the day, Chattanooga teams were 1-7 after going 7-2 on Wednesday.

After losing to defending champ Friendship Christian in Thursday's first match, the Lady Bucs bounced back to defeat Knoxville Grace by a 3-2 score to earn a second chance against the Lady Commanders.

The second time will be on the state's biggest stage as they'll be playing in Murphy Center for the Class A state title, tentatively set to begin around 3 p.m. Chattanooga time.

Baylor, Boyd-Buchanan and East Hamilton had all advanced to the winners' bracket final in their respective classifications, but they all lost their first match on Thursday.

Harpeth Hall defeated Baylor by a 3-1 margin, winning by scores of 25-19, 25-21, 23-25 and 25-20 in the D-II-AA match.  The Lady Red Raiders lost again later in the day as St. Agnes prevailed by scores of 27-25, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-20.

"My girls played their hearts out all day and I couldn't be more proud," said Baylor coach Sarah Lail after her team's season ended at 34-14.

"Every set we played was close, but we left it on the court and we don't have any regrets.  Both teams had fabulous outside hitters.  We tried to defend them the best we could as we never gave up.

"There was a lot of great volleyball played today," Lail added.

East Hamilton's first loss was 3-1 to Goodpasture while the second was against CAK, the team that the Lady Hurricanes had beaten in Wednesday's second round.

"We played a solid match against Goodpasture, but we just didn't quite have it against CAK in the second one," said East Hamilton coach Kristy Lenoir later.

"They just had a little more left than we did, but they were coming off a high with a big win while we were trying to rebound from a tough loss.  We lost to two really good teams today, but I'll take third place and be thrilled.

"We did some good things today, but both teams were considerably bigger than we were.  I knew we needed to play near-perfect volleyball to win and we didn't," Lenoir added.

Red Bank and Ooltewah had been sent to the losers bracket with losses on Wednesday and both were eliminated from further competition with losses in their first match on Thursday.

Red Bank, which finished third last year, got put out by Christian Academy of Knoxville, 3-1, by scores of 25-18, 25-8, 24-26 and 25-19.

"We wanted to do better, but we're just going to focus on the positives as we had another outstanding season," Red Bank coach Christel Brooks said.

"Obviously, we didn't play our best today as our ball control just wasn't there, but I guess it just wasn't meant to be.  We could have done better, but overall, we've had a great year," Brooks added.

Ooltewah had a real dogfight with Bearden before getting put out, 3-2.  Bearden won the first set 25-13 before Ooltewah won the next two by scores of 25-23 and 25-17.  It just wasn't meant to be as the Lady Bulldogs claimed the last two sets by scores of 26-24 and 18-16.

"We've had a lot of close matches this year where we came out on top, but it just didn't happen today," said Ooltewah coach Elaine Peigen after her team's season ended at 36-20.

"We've had a great season.  We aren't pleased with the way it ended, but we're happy that we made it back here this week.  It's been a great year and we just have to keep holding our heads up, leaving here feeling proud of our accomplishments," Peigen added.

Leondra Barrett had an outstanding match against Bearden as she finished with 24 kills and four blocks, in addition to four digs.  Kelsey Chernak finished with 41 assists while Sloan Sullivan had 18 digs to accompany her nine kills.
