Soddy Daisy Wins Region 3 Soccer Title

Trojans Edge Warren County, 6-5

Thursday, October 25, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

McMinnville, Tenn. -- Host Warren County lit up the Thursday night sky with fireworks prior to the match and then the players from Soddy Daisy and  Warren County lit up the scoreboard with fireworks of their own  - 11 goals  - as the visiting Trojans posted a 6-5 victory for the Region 3 girls soccer title.

Miranda Smith scored a hat trick and assisted on three other goals for Soddy Daisy which improved to 17-2-3 while teammate Summer Lanter added two goals and Megan Weller also scored.

The Trojans led 5-2 at half and added a sixth goal in the first two minutes of the second half, and then held off a Lady Pioneer rally for the win.

"We cannot spot a team as good as Soddy Daisy is, three goals and expect to win," said Warren County coach Todd Willmore who is a Warren County graduate and played football at the Naval Academy.

"Soddy Daisy is a phenominal team which keeps attacking. They make us better."

Saturday's Sectional: Soddy Daisy has now won five straight region titles and hosts a sectional match Saturday night at 6 p.m. EDT against Blackman, who lost to Siegel, 1-0, in the Region 4 final.  Warren County travels to Siegel.

Re-Match: Tonight's win was almost a repeat of the two team's match in late September as Soddy Daisy held a three-goal lead at halftine (3-0), only to have the Lady Pioneers storm back for five goals in the final 40 minutes in a 5-5 tie.

"They (Warren County) get good support from their fans and it was real loud in the closing minutes, but having played here earlier in the season helped a lot as we knew what to expect and we kept telling each other that the fans cheer, but they don't play the match," said Soddy Daisy senior center midfielder Natalie Smith.

"I am proud of a few things you did tonight and I was impressed with the way you battled throughout the entire match," Soddy Daisy coach Moises Drumond told the players after the match.

"There are 16 teams remaining and after Saturday only eight will advance to the state tournament next week."

Miranda Smith put Soddy Daisy up 1-0 in the first five minutes only to see Warren County take a 2-1 lead after 17 minutes on goals by .Lauren Roller and Morgan McCormick.

The Trojans then scored four unaswered goals -  Summer Lanter (2), Megan Weller and Smith - for the three-goal lead at intermission.

After Smith's third goal of the evening in the second minute of the second half, Warren County fought back with three goals - one on a penalty kick in the 54th minute and the final one with eight minutes remaining - but the Soddy Daisy defense kept the ball out of the next down the stretch for the win.

"It was a tough match tonight, but I was able to get open for my shots," said Smith who had two goals and two assists in the 7-3 Region 3 semis win Tuesday.

Warren County (15-8-1) goals were by Ansley Millican, McCormick and Ayla Anish.

"It was crazy and stressful in the closing minutes, but everyone held together for the win," said Soddy Daisy goakeeper Baylee Burk who had five saves on the night including a diving stop in the 12th minute and the Trojans leading 1-0.

"This is definitely my biggest win in goal .. thus far," stated the sophomore who knows that the Trojans need four more victories for the state championship.

Kudos To Warren County Players: A touch of class as the Warren County players came over to the Soddy Daisy post-match meeting to give another congratulation salute to the victors.

Third Playoff Meeting: Soddy Daisy has beaten Warren County three straight years in the playoffs ... 4-0 in 2010 in the Region 3 semis ... 6-0 in 2011 in the Region 3 semis ... 6-5 in 2012 in the Region 3 finals.
