A multi-vehicle accident on I-24 Friday morning sent four people to the hospital, and shut down the interstate for hours.

According to authorities, there were six automobiles involved with four patients transported to a local hospital. One patient was listed in critical condition. The other three patients were transported for non life-threatening injuries.

A person caught up in the traffic jam said the wreck was caused by a female driver who was swerving in and out of lanes at a very high rate of speed with her warning lights on.

The logjam sent a flood of vehicles onto nearby side streets, causing long backups there.

I-24 westbound did not reopen until shortly before 3 p.m.
