Police said a clerk at an Exxon on Highway 58 foiled a holdup by beating the armed robber with a bat.

Kirk Edward Peters, 36, of 542 Lakeview Dr., Rossville, is charged with aggravated robbery and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Pankaj Chaudhary said a white male came to the counter with a beer in his hand as if he was going to purchase it. He said the man then demanded that he give him the money from the register.

When the clerk declined, the robber produced a black revolver and again demanded the money.

Police said customers were coming in and going out of the store during the holdup and, while the robber's attention was diverted to them, the clerk "came from behind the counter with a bat and proceeded to beat" the robber, who ran out of the store with the clerk close behind.

He got into a gray Hunundai and fled the scene. During the chase, he dropped the revolver.

Police said Peters was dropped off on Hixson Pike, where he flagged down a patrol officer. He told police the had been involved in a robbery and suffered injuries.

Peters was taken into custody after being checked out at the hospital.
