Tennessee American Water announced it will start flushing its water distribution system Monday as part of the company’s routine, annual maintenance program for water mains and fire hydrants. The water company expects the flushing program to last for several weeks.
Flushing the water distribution system entails sending a rapid flow of water through the water mains to clear out mineral deposits and sediments that may have built up over time inside the water distribution system pipes. As part of the flushing program, crews will check and operate fire hydrants to help ensure fire protection in the community.
While the flushing program is underway, customers may experience a temporary drop in water pressure or discoloration of their water for a short period of time. If this occurs, customers should simply let the water run briefly, and the situation should clear up on its own with a few minutes.
