The Dalton Police Department is warning, "If you get a call from someone claiming to represent an area business who asks you to load money onto a 'Green Dot' card to pay a bill, don’t do it. It is a scam."
The Dalton Police Department has received reports from citizens in recent days complaining that they have received calls from a person claiming to represent Dalton Utilities. The caller tells the potential victim that their account is overdue and instructs the victim to put money onto a “Green Dot” credit card to avoid the shutoff of their services. A “Green Dot” card is a pre-paid credit card that works just like a regular credit card or debit card. The scam has also been attempted with callers identifying themselves as representatives of other businesses.
Anyone who has received one of these calls and paid money to the scammers, can file a police report by calling the DPD at 706-278-9085 and dialing “1” to have an officer dispatched to his or her location. If you did not pay money, it is not necessary to file a report, but if you have any information which may help the investigation such as a phone number from your caller ID for the scammers, please contact the Dalton Police Tip Line at 706 278-9085, ext. 221.
