Signal Mountain Sweeps Region 4 A-AA Golf Titles

Thursday, October 04, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

Bear Trace Golf Course in Harrison might become the future “home away from home” for the Signal Mountain golf program.

On Tuesday at the Region 4 A-AA golf championship at Bear Trace, the Eagles girls’ golf team shot a 164 to win their fourth straight region title, while the boys made school history with a 302 and the first region team championship.

The boys win was special since the Eagles defeated defending state champion Notre Dame.

“To finally win the region feels great,” said senior Jackson Cooper.

“It has taken a lot of hard work to get here but we deserve the region championship.”

Both Eagles teams will compete in next week’s D-I A-AA state championship at WillowBrook Golf Course in Manchester.

Looking for a  Four-Peat: The Signal Mountain girls team enters the state as the favorite after winning the championship the past three years.

“This course (Bear Trace) is great for us as we kept the ball in the fairway and overall putted well,” said Signal Mountain coach Rodney Mitchell.

Signal Mountain senior Haley Davidson won the region championship with an 81, while teammates Bethany Burns shot an 83 and Marli Patten carded a 97.

For the boys, Sullivan Baker and Jimmy Billings led the way with 73s followed by Austin Nolan (74), Jackson Cooper (82) and freshman Jacob Bailey (86).

Chattanooga Christian sophomore Scott Stevens won the boys region championship in a two-hole playoff with Robert Gwynne of Friendship Christian as both players tied with 71s after 18 holes.

Well Run Event: Kudos to coaches Jeff Fisher (Notre Dame) and Don Holwerda (Chattanooga Christian) for an organzed and well run tournament and to Bear Trace for the use of the golf course.

Replace Airport Authority Board Members - And Response

The public needs to intervene on the absolutely absurd Wilson Air Waste (WWW) at the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport.  What this all comes down to is our elected officials have appointed board members to oversee the budget and decision making at the airport, and they clearly do not respect public resources.   Contrary to the Airport Authority CEO’s statement ... Roy Exum: The Colonel: ‘Tell My Sons’

In the Broadway play, “The Civil War,” there is an emotional song called “Tell My Father,” the words that a dying Union soldier on a distant battlefield asked to be delivered when the other troops got back home. The reason Lt. Col. Mark Weber sang that very song with his oldest son Matt was because the highly-decorated officer was fighting Stage IV intestinal cancer at the ... (click for more)
