Community Arts Funding Event is a monthly series of grantmaking held October through February at Planet Altered in the heart of the Southside. The grass roots approach to proving small grants to community artists includes a simple dinner for ticket holders and a voting card to choose the local artist they wish to support.
Each month is assigned to an established, local volunteer artist who serves as a curator to applicants by reviewing the applications and selecting three presenting artists and helping them prepare for their presentations. Three local artists have 10-15 minutes to pitch their ideas and answer questions to local art supporters who have purchased $12 tickets, with $10 of every ticket being returned to the artist voted by community as having the best idea for a maximum award of $400.
Tickets are available for $12 which includes dinner. Forty diners equals $400 to the winning artist. All artists have the opportunity to share their project and artistic goals with community and leave their business cards. Planet Altered also offers an 80/20 split to local artists whose work is a good match for the Fair Trade shop. Teaching artists are also given an 80/20 split.
Applications for artists are currently being accepted and tickets are available. The dates are: Second Sundays, 6-8 p.m. Oct. 14, Nov. 11, Dec. 9, Jan. 13, and Feb. 10. February is dedicated to schools and education based organizations, both public and private. Call 400-4100 to order tickets by phone or e-mail info@planetaltered.com to request an artist application.
