Pioneers 12s Defeat Mustangs 12s In Battle Of Unbeatens

Tuesday, October 09, 2012

The East Ridge Pioneers 12s remained undefeated Saturday with a 51-22 victory over the previously undefeated East Ridge Mustangs.

East Ridge Pioneers coach Kevin Wright was impressed with the first half of play in the highly-anticipated Scenic City Youth Football League game played at McCallie School.

“It was an epic battle of the Greek Titans and the first half was a battle royal,” Wright said.

The see-saw first half ended with the Pioneers leading 24-22.

The Pioneers scored on their first possession and took a 6-0 lead.

The Mustangs answered back with a 72-yard touchdown pass from Austin Chastain to DeVonte Tipton. Chastain then threw to Riley Harrison in the back of the end zone for a 2-point play and an 8-6 lead.

The Mustangs (5-1) had a pair of first half touchdowns from Jordan Hughley (12 yard run and interception return), while Chastain passed to Jordan Sims for the 2-point conversion following  the second TD.

Walker was literally unstoppable with runs of 51, 62, 55 and 39 yards for the game.

Kamren Holcomb added touchdown runs of 41 and 36 yards for East Ridge (6-0).

Mustangs coach Stump Martin said Walker and Holcomb were the best two backs in the league.

“They’re fun to watch,” Martin said. “They’re both close to 6-foot and fast and we spent most of the day chasing one of them. The Pioneers blocked and tackled in the second half and my team didn’t. That’s my fault. Kevin has a SCYFL Super Bowl champion team.”

Tre Thompson had a 39-yard TD run; Korey Chitwood an 8-yard scoring run and Nolan Letzgus caught a 35-yard pass late in the game from Eric Bennett.

Blake Wright, James Parks, Dennis Freeman, Kaben Bragg, Jared Scott, Jonathon Joffre and Hunter Price were defensive standouts for the Pioneers.

8-Year-Old Results:

The 8-year-old Pioneers continued to dominate SCYFL play with a 26-0 victory over Signal Mountain.

It was the team’s 29th consecutive win in SCYFL play over the past three seasons.

Quarterback Mason Long completed 6-of-8 passes for 151 yards. Jakobe Thomas had two TD runs and Gage Sartin added a 55-yard run to set up his 2-yard scoring plunge. Carson Yates also added a short TD run.

The East Ridge 8s were led on defense by Dacorian Jones-Montgomery, Kye Songer, Thomas and Long. Justice Grier recovered a fumble.

ER 7s: The East Ridge 7s lost 13-7 to Lookout Valley. Jaylon Moore scored the only TD for the Pioneers, who had two long drives ended by fumbles.
