Creative Discovery Museum will be the center of activity for all things tiny during the Chattanooga Gas Free Family Night on Thursday, March 8, from 5:30-8 p.m. Guests will discover how big the small world around them truly is as they examine how nanoscale technology can be found in clothes, toys, sunscreen and other familiar products.
A nano is a prefix for a scale of measurement which means one billionth. Guests will learn how scientists of all kinds are working together to develop new things that were never possible before through nanoscale technology.
During Nano Night, guests are invited to play with water that seemingly defies gravity, compare the effect of nanoscale atomic particles on different sizes of Styrofoam balls and examine what happens to light as it passes through butterfly wings. Guests will also be able to utilize different kinds of tools to manipulate various materials to mimic the types of tools needed for nanoscale science and technology. Free nano temporary tattoos will be given to guests who wish to show their support for Nano Night.
Nano Night at Creative Discovery Museum is part of a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering. Nano Night activities at Creative Discovery Museum were developed by the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network. This community-based event is the largest public outreach effort in nanoscale informal science education and involves science museums, research centers and universities from Puerto Rico to Alaska.
Nano Night is part of the Chattanooga Gas Free Family Night for the month of March.
