Sophomore Hollie German scored a career-high 31 points as the Lee University Lady Flames extended their winning streak to 15 with a 81-61 win over visiting Brewton-Parker College, Thursday night.
Following Thursday’s game, the Lee Athletic Department honored Coach Marty Rowe, former coach and Lee Hall of Fame member, Jack Souther, and Rowe’s wife, Pam, in a short ceremony. This past Saturday, Rowe passed Souther on the Lady Flames all-time win list, now standing at 220 wins overall.
“It was special to be honored with Jack (Souther) and Pam (Rowe) before the men’s game,” said Coach Rowe. “Pam has been by my side since I began coaching and is a big part of our team.”
“Jack was the first man I met from Lee. He has encouraged me ever since my first day on campus. He’s just a great man and a tremendous supporter of all Lee athletics.”
The Lee ladies jumped on top early in Thursday’s fast-paced contest, eventually taking a 12-point lead into the halftime break, 36-24. The Lee scoring attack intensified in the second frame, as the Lady Flames shot 56-percent from the field to pull away for the 20-point win.
Overall, Lee shot 49-percent, knocking down 44-percent behind theadmin arc. They converted 15-of-22 free throws, 68-percent. On the other hand, Brewton-Parker shot 37-percent to start the game, finding the touch to the tune of 53-percent shooting in the second half, closing the game at 46-percent.
The Lady Barons scored 42 points in the lane, but the big difference came behind the arc and at the free throw line, as the Lady Barons converted just one three-pointer, as well as 6-of-20 from the charity stripe (30-percent).
“Hollie (German) was just awesome, we pushed her for over 33 minutes tonight,” added Rowe. “I was really disappointed with our effort on defense. We came out flat and allowed them to take the ball to the rim all night. We were never willing to take a charge, and I thought, with the exception of Hollie, our reserves outplayed our starters.”
German was solid in all aspects, hitting 10-of-14 shots, 5-of-7 three-pointers, and all six of her free throw attempts. Freshman Jenna Adams was the only other Lady Flames player in double-figure scoring, coming off the bench to toss in 13 points and a game-high six rebounds. As a team, the Lee ladies totaled 22 assists, led by six from Brooke Hamby.
Brewton-Parker (12-12, 7-8 SSAC) was led by an 18-point, five rebound performance by Ashley White. Quagee Gaines added 12 points, with LaToya Foster pitching in 11 points and five boards.
Lee won the battle of the boards, outrebounding the visitors 37-34, and turned the ball over 17 times, compared to 19 floor mistakes for Brewton-Parker.
The 4th-ranked Lady Flames move their overall record to 24-1 with the win, now 16-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) play with four league games remaining on the season.
The next two games will be played on the road, as the Lady Flames travel to Truett-McConnell College, Saturday, for a 2 p.m. contest, before heading to Gainesville, Ga. to take on Brenau University, Monday at 6 p.m.
