A Good School Takes Involvement - And Response

Monday, February 13, 2012
As I have read the articles concerning Normal Park School I can’t keep from thinking when our children started to school in the 1960‘s. The two elementary schools in the city that were considered tops were Barger and Woodmore. We did not live in the zone for either school so we looked for a house to buy that was zoned for Woodmore.

We found that there was a lot that went into making a school very desirable. It was a lot more than location, staff and building that help create an atmosphere of learning and growing children. One of the major components was the involvement and support of the parents. This included involvement not only in the school but also in the home. Overseeing that study and homework was accomplished and checked each day.

Involvement included being active in the PTA. The PTA meetings were unusual in that if you didn’t get there 15 or 20 minutes early you might have to stand during the meetings. This group accomplished some great things during the years our kids were students. One year Woodmore PTA raised over 2 times the money for the school than any other school in the county.

Some of their accomplishments, one year they air conditioned all the class rooms and the next year the rest of the school. They built and lighted the ball field. They paved the parking lots. They got the school a new piano and whatever the school needed they found a way to supply the need. If needed there would be a committee knocking on the supertendant’s door.

One of the big reasons this all took place was that schools were community zoned and parents took a special interest in the welfare of the children and the school. The teachers and principal knew they had the support and appreciation of all the families in the community. A number of parents could walk to a PTA meeting. When things change there are some good things lost.

I agree with Mr. Kennedy. Parents are a child’s first and most important teacher. If parents are responsible then their children learn responsibility. If parents set and enforce limits then children learn limits. If school is important to the parents children place importance on school.

So, if you are a parent the best investment that you can make is in your child’s education. Get involved.

There is not enough punishment available to this man and his cohorts to give justice for all the magnificent horses he maimed and tortured.  That video was the most sickening thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I have cried all weekend.   Plus he was totally unrepentant in the ... (click for more)
