ITF Seniors World Championships in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Led by Zan Guerry's straight set win on Sunday, Chattanooga has been well represented among the winners the first two days of the International Tennis Federation Seniors World Championships here.

Playing in the Men's 55s, Guerry celebrated his 63rd birthday Sunday with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph against No. 32 seed Carlos Eduardo Freitas Mamede (Brazil). Guerry's doubles partner Wes Cash also won his round of 128 match on Monday as he defeated No.26 Takamichi (Japan), 7-5 6-4.

Philp Johnson stopped Ricardo Wagner Roqetti (Brazil), 6-2, 6-2, in the Men's 45s on Monday. Johnson is playing Men's 45s Doubles with Kelly Evernden.

Doubles - Guerry-Cash are a No.4 seed in Men's 50s Doubles, received a round of 32 bye and should play a round of 32 match on Wednesday. The Chattanooga tandem finshed second at the Seniors World Championships in 2002 in the 45s.

 On the women's side, Covenant College tennis coach Sue Webb and GPS coach Sue Bartlett are playing in the Women's 50s. They play doubles today and Bartlett plays a round of 32 singles match also today.

Special Guerry Weekend

This past Friday, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga sports hall of fame announced that the Guerry family will receive the Gordon Davenport Award for outstanding commitment to UTC athletics  at the UTC Hall of Fame dinner on Feb. 24 at the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club.

Tennessee Tennis HOF: Saturday night in Nashville, Pat Guerry was inducted into the Tennessee Tennis Hall of Fame. Pat played tennis at Baylor School and was a four-time All-American at Sewanee.

Fran Chandler from Jackson. Tenn. was also inducted. Chandler, who played college tennis at Ole Miss, is in San Diego at the ITF World Championships. She coached the USA Women's 50s to a second place finish on Sunday in the World Team Championships and she will compete in the Women's 50s singles and doubles this week.

Sunday, Zan Guerry turned 63 and won his round of 128 singles match. He will be inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in May.

Teen Killed When Thrown From Hood Of Car At Old Kmart On Signal Mountain Road

A 17-year-old was killed Sunday night when he was thrown from the hood of a vehicle at the old Kmart on Signal Mountain Road. At 8:34 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to 680 Signal Mountain Road where they found the teen suffering from head trauma. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.  Traffic investigators said ...
