Lady Mocs Host 12-Team Frost Classic Inspired By Memorial

The home opener at Frost Stadium for the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga softball team is Friday as the Lady Mocs host a doubleheader against Valparaiso and Niagara beginning at 1:15 p.m., as apart of the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial. The 12-team field also includes Ball St., Belmont, Cleveland St., Dayton, East Tennessee St., Purdue, UT Martin, Tennessee Tech, and Troy, who will play at Frost Stadium and a three fields at Warner Park beginning at 11 a.m. each day.

All games at Frost Stadium will have subscription-based video through MocsVision. The Voice of Lady Mocs Softball, Tyler Brown, has the play-by-play call for all the contests that include Chattanooga.

Following the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial, the Lady Mocs are off to Oxford, Miss., for the Red and Black Classic on Mar. 3-5. Chattanooga battles host Ole Miss, Troy and Belmont during the three-day tournament.

Lady Mocs vs. Valparaiso: 2-0
Series History: This is the first meeting between the two teams since the Lady Mocs swept a doubleheader, 6-2 and 8-1, in the Scenic City.
Scouting Report: The Crusaders enter the weekend with a 3-1 record and victories over Nebraska-Omaha (6-0), Iowa St. (11-5) and Drake (11-5), while losing to host Northern Iowa (0-6). Jordan Rutkowski has a .500 average, while Amanda Wisniewski has two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Leading the team in RBI is Brittany Duncan with six. In the circle, Alex Lagesse has a 2-0 mark in 18 innings pitched and 18 strikeouts. Sam McGee is 1-1 on the year in nine innings with seven strikeouts. Head Coach Jordan Stevens is in his second season at the helm of the program after a 34-21-1 year to begin his tenure.

Lady Mocs vs. Niagara: 0-0
Series History: First meeting.
Scouting Report: The Purple Eagles are opening their 2012 season at the Frost Classic Inspired by Memorial. Niagara wien 18-18 last season and are expected to finish fourth in the Mid-American Athletic Conference by the leagues coaches. Becky Zill and Jennifer Hare were named to the preseason MAAC all-conference team. Zill posted a .344 batting average, seven doubles, 12 home runs and 35 RBI. Hare compiled a .310 average with 39 hits, five doubles, six home runs and 23 RBI. Kim Bryson, who went 9-7, and Julie DiMatteo, who had a 4-8 mark, are returning in the circle. Guiding the Purple Eagles in his 22nd season is Al Dirschberger.

Lady Mocs vs. East Tennessee State: 16-3
Series History: Chattanooga won the past seven meetings dating back to 2004, with the last two coming at the Frost Classic in 2008 (1-0) and 2011 (11-1, 5 inn.). The Bucs took two of five meetings in 2003 as a member of the SoCon. The series began in 2001 with the Lady Mocs taking 10 of the first 11 match ups.
Scouting Report: East Tenn. St. is 1-7 on the season with the lone victory coming against Nichols State (10-5) in Troy, Ala., last weekend. It has also dropped game to Western Carolina (4-5, 10-11 (9)), Georgia St. (2-11), Longwood (2-3), Ball St. (2-7), Eastern Kentucky (2-3 (8)) and No. 5 Missouri (3-9). Sam Lower (.423) and Alex Everett (.400) enter the weekend with .400 batting averages. Lower has driven in a team-best 10 runs along with two home runs. Whitney Leon is 1-1 with a 1.83 ERA on the season in 7.2 innings. The workhorse of the staff has been Shelby Morris logging 23.0 innings and a team-best 10 strikeouts. Head Coach Brad Irwin, a former Lady Mocs assistant, is in his second season leading the Bucs. He is assisted by first-year graduate assistant Tiffany Baker, a Chattanooga standout that graduated in May 2011 and is the Lady Mocs and SoCon all-time home run leader with 50.

Lady Mocs vs. Purdue: 3-3
Series History: Two meetings have been held at Frost Stadium with each team earning a win as the Lady Mocs won 4-2 in 2005 and the Boilermakers took a 3-1 decision in 2004. The other four matchups have occurred in the Sunshine State with Purdue winning in 1997 (3-0) and 2008 (3-0). Chattanooga won during the 1999 (6-1) and 2002 (3-1) seasons.
Scouting Report: Purdue started the season with victories over Bryan (10-2), Northern Colorado (10-1), Central Arkansas (8-6) and New Mexivo (10-6) at the Lobo Classic. The Boilermaker offense is paced by Ashley Courtney (.556), Lindsey Rains (.556) and Andie Varsho (.500). Erika Petruzzi powers the offense with two home runs and six RBI. In the circle, Lexi Moore is 3-0 on the season and has not given up an earned run, while striking out six. Alex Whittlemore has struck out three in seven innings in recording a 1-0 mark. Head Coach Kim Maher is in her seventh season leading the Boilermaker program.

Lady Mocs vs. Dayton: 2-0
Series History: Both meetings have occurred at the Frost Classic with the Lady Mocs being victorious with a 3-1 win in 2004 and a 6-4 in 2009.
Scouting Report: Dayton is seeking its first win of the season heading into the Scenic City after dropping contests to UT Arlington (2-5), Texas State (0-7, 0-3) and Rutgers (0-8 (5)) in the Texas State Classic. Carlyn Harlow (.500), Kathleen Maloof (.455) and Megan Barrett (.400) are the team leaders in batting average. Maloof paces the team with three doubles as the Flyers are looking to drive in their first run of the season. Hurler Alysha Isaacson has tossed 13.0 innings yielding a 1.62 ERA with just five earned runs. Kayla English and Sarah Wedel have each taken a loss in the circle. Dayton is coached by Cara LaPlaca, who is in her fifth season.

Fuzzard SoCon Player of the Week - Feb. 20
- Senior designated player and pitcher Michelle Fuzzard went 5-for-6 at the plate during  the Georgia State Panther Invitational.
- Compiled an .833 average, 2.000 slugging and .819 on-base pct.
- Connected on two home runs vs. Eastern Illinois for second time in career.
- Also drove in five runs along with a double.
- Fuzzard's 13 RBI and 1.000 slugging pct. lead the SoCon.
- It is the fifth Player of the Week award for the Huntington Beach, Calif., native.

Lady Mocs Hitting the Long Ball
- Junior Kasey Tydingco and Fuzzard each hit a home run on the opening weekend.
- The Lady Mocs, then, connected on seven in three games at the Panther Invitational
- Senior shortstop Jessica Traxler blasted a career-best two against IUPUI, while Fuzzard added two against Eastern Illinois, tying a career-high.
- Senior designated player Vivian Morimoto and freshman outfielder Nicole Osterman also drove pitches over the fence for their first round trippers of the season.
- Tydingco later tied the contest against Eastern Illinois with a homer in the sixth.
