Soddy Daisy, Cleveland Stay On Collision Course In State Duals Wrestling

Trojans Face Independence While Blue Raiders Take On Science Hill In Semifinals

Saturday, February 04, 2012 - by John Hunt

FRANKLIN -- The top two Division I teams in the state are still on a collision course for a match in Saturday night's finals of the TSSAA State Duals wrestling tournament.

Soddy Daisy and Cleveland both won two matches here at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center and are both one match away from a berth in the finals.

Soddy Daisy blasted Wilson Central 61-3 in the first round while Cleveland rolled past Blackman with little problem, 59-12.

The Trojans then defeated Clarksville by a 39-29 final in the quarterfinals to earn a berth in Saturday afternoon's semifinals against Independence.

Cleveland spanked Ravenwood by a 36-27 final in another quarterfinal and will be tested by Science Hill in Saturday's other semifinal.

Soddy Daisy looked good in its first match against the Wildcats with six pins and a technical fall among its 13 wins.

Brett Ervin, Alex Seeley, Campbell Lewis, Gage Richmond, Blaike Henry and Luke Reno all won with pins while Turbo Smith added a technical fall for the victorious Trojans.

Billy Swanson, Richmond and Henry earned pins against Clarksville while Lewis had a technical fall.

Despite two big wins, Soddy Daisy coach Steve Henry wasn't totally satisfied with the way his kids performed.

"I thought we looked flat, so we'll have to get over that," Henry explained later right as he was about to enjoy a steak dinner.

"We're real complacent right now.  The match with Clarksville was wierd.  They didn't seem to want to wrestle and my guys got frustrated.  We were just glad to get that one out of the way.

"I'm going to find a room somewhere and we're going to practice Saturday morning as we have to get ready for Independence.  We're getting everybody's "A" game, but we have to step up and get serious," Henry added.

Cleveland got pins from Jordan Hines, Chris Debien, Austin Oliver, Joel Simpkins, Brandon Strickland and Josh Hamilton in the win over Blackman while Debien, Austin Stevison and Oliver had consecutive pins against Ravenwood.

The 36-27 score against the Raptors was a little deceiving as Cleveland forfeited the final three matches after the outcome had been decided.

Cleveland coach Eric Phillips was really proud of the manner in which his team took care of business.

"The kids wrestled really hard in both matches and I thought they showed a lot of intensity and composure," he said while watching the end of the Baylor-Christian Brothers match.

"We're doing what we're supposed to do and everything went about the way I thought it would.  We won the ones we should have won and we won a few close ones too.  I knew Austin Oliver had a tough match against Ravenwood, but he got a pin and that was really special.

"Tomorrow's match with Science Hill should be a good one," he added.

The Bradley Bears are the defending AAA champions while Soddy Daisy was the runner-up last year.  Cleveland did not qualify for the tournament last year.

The Walking Horse Industry Is Laughable - And Response

Roy Exum has said it all- "The industry is laughable."  The Humane Society's Keith Dane said last week, "The penalties are not sufficient ... jail time is the only sufficient penalty." Absolutely.  It is time for the Walking Horse industry to be treated in the same way that cock fighting and dog fighting are treated by the law.  Remember Michael Vick?  ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: The Horse Industry Is Livid

I am convinced that when Jackie "The Jerk" McConnell appears in U.S. District Court today in Chattanooga, he will do so as perhaps the most despised man in the history of the state of Tennessee. A heart-wrenching video of the despicable McConnell cruelly beating a horse in its face with an electric cattle prod has been shown repeatedly since Wednesday night and has appeared in countless ...
