Meeting Set On Hixson Treasures From The Past Exhibit

Sunday, February 05, 2012

A meeting has been set for Feb. 11 to discuss a "Hixson Treasures from the Past" exhibit.

It will be at the North River Civic Center, 1009 Executive Dr., on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Persons interested in helping with the exhibit are asked to attend.

The North River Civic Center will showcase items that pertain to Hixson history.  These are items that have been loaned to the center by individuals and organizations specifically for this special exhibit.  The items will be displayed on the walls of the civic center and in a large glass case similar to a trophy case that can be locked.

Linda Rugina, director of the Civic Center, invites everyone to share their Hixson history by entering local photographs, costumes, manuscripts, archives and artifacts, including items that pertain to historic events, groundbreaking innovations or lively cultural scenes.   It is preferred that items suitable for display on the wall be prepared by you for such display in advance, but if you need assistance with that, please feel free to contact Linda Rugina as she may be able to provide such assistance.  It is not permissible to mark as being for sale the items that you offer for display in the exhibit.  If it would not be feasible or advisable for the original of any of the items you would like to display to be loaned to the Civic Center for the exhibit, please consider providing a photograph of the item or for your old photographs, a copy of the original photograph.

The exhibit will be at the civic center from March-May.

Items to be entered into the exhibit should be delivered to Ms. Rugina at the Civic Center by Friday, Feb. 17.

For more information, contact  Ms. Rugina at 870-8924 or rugina_l@chattanooga.gov

Directions to North River Civic Center:  From the road that circles the perimeter of Northgate Mall, turn onto the road that is immediately to the left of the Hixson Post Office, go past the first row of office buildings on your left and then ahead and to your left, turn into the parking area between the two rows of office buildings that face each other; the Civic Center will be in the row of office buildings on your left; look for the sign above the entrance.

Responses To Memories Of East Brainerd

Since I grew up in the East Brainerd area and went to Tyner with classmates who lived there, I forwarded the recent article  "Memories of East Brainerd" to them.  I am a genealogy and local history buff and enjoyed both the article and the responses from classmates.  I was particularly amazed by the response of George Sewell below.  I knew of the Walkers ... Memories of East Brainerd

Mention the name East Brainerd these days and it conjures up visions of massive commercial activity, shopping, suburban affluence, fast food, and fine dining.  A newly-arrived suburbanite having just immigrated from across the Ohio or Mississippi Rivers would not recognize the East Brainerd that existed when my family moved out here in 1967. It would be another 20 years ... (click for more)

Debates Don't Decide Leadership Ability

I've watched how some in the media have attacked Scottie Mayfield for not debating. I've never been to a debate, and I am not going to vote for someone because they are able to remember and recite from memory, the well crafted answers they came up with the night before.   Often times, candidates focus on attacking each other instead of influencing undecided voters on any ... Roy Exum: Two Horse Owners Write

As Jackie McConnell was being told he now faces up to five years in prison and a multitude of other penalties after pleading guilty to just one of 48 counts in violation of the Horse Protection Act on Tuesday, the outcry from Tennessee Walking Horse owners was incredible and there is a groundswell of support growing to either clean up a very crooked industry or actually ban it. ...
