Matthew McElhaney joined the Army and gained about 90 aunts. Matthew was adopted during basic training by the members of the Nancy Ward Chapter of the DAR. They kept him supplied with goodies for himself and men who served with him while he served a tour in Korea.
He has returned to Ft . Campbell and is preparing for deployment to Afghanistan.
He will be company commander and his DAR aunts will see that they are well taken care of.
He visited Mrs. Pauline Moore, DAR Service for Veterans State Chair and Chaplin of the Nancy Ward chapter, at Rivermont Presbyterian Church and got to meet some of his aunts. He relayed the impact of the DAR project, saying that “one cannot imagine what it is like to be away from home and feeling alone...and greatly needing reassurance of the support of the people you serve."
