The Highway 58 Volunteer Fire Department spent Wednesday afternoon fighting two fires.
Firefighters received an alarm at 11:43 a.m. regarding a house fire in the 12000 block of Birchwood Pike. The first truck and crew was on the scene at 11:55 a.m. and reported a garage and storage room was engulfed in flames.
Due to windy conditions, the fire had rapidly spread to the house and bedroom at the northeast corner of the home and then up into the attic. According to Fire Chief C.
R. Harris, quick response and action by the firefighters contained the fire to just the bedroom.
Unofficial estimates put the damage at about $20,000, with only smoke and water damage to the remainder of the house. The homeowner was able to evacuate the house and there were no injuries. The American Red Cross Disaster Team responded to assist the homeowner. Hamilton County Emergency Medical personnel were called to stand by in the event there were any injuries.
As crews were returning to their stations, another alarm was sounded in regards to a large grass fire on Sam Smith Road in Birchwood. Two trucks and crews responded and found about three acres were burning. A house was in the path of the rapidly-spreading fire.
The command on scene called for a fire fighting brush truck and crew. The flames were extinguished in a short time with no other damages.
