The Lee University Tennis teams swept visiting Olivet Nazarene University Saturday morning at the DeVos Tennis Center. The Lady Flames (4-0) won 6-3, while the Flames (3-1) were 8-1 victors.
The Lady Flames (ranked No. 13 in the NAIA) took a 3-0 lead following the doubles matches and split the singles matches to take down the Tigers from Bourbonnais, Ill.
Tonya Walters and Kelsey Gray needed a tie-breaker to defeat Aurelie Hascoet and Taylor Stephens, 9-8 (7-4), at No. 1 doubles. Tarah Garner teamed with Annie Sandberg for an 8-5 win over Ashlan Allison and Tifanny Aguirre. Stephanie Todd and Christy North blanked Lindsey Peterson and Cassandra Brainard, 8-0.
Hascoet put the Tigers in the win column with a 6-4, 6-3 defeat of Walters at No. 1 singles. Stephens pulled Olivet to within one with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Gray. Lindsey Peterson gave ONU their third team point with a 6-2, 6-2 defeat of Todd at No. 5 singles.
Garner knocked off Allison, 6-2 and 6-0, at No. 3 singles. Sandberg dropped just one game to Aguirre (6-0, 6-1) to seal the team win. Jodie Rice was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Brainard.
The No. 17 Flames took a commanding 3-0 lead following the doubles matches and won 5-of-6 singles matches to claim the rout.
Michael Yokosuk and Richard Gamble teamed at No. 1 doubles for an 8-4 win over Sebastian Esquetini and Diego Gonsalvez. Patrick Kim and Renan Molineiro recorded an 8-3 decision over Julian Kurz and Camilo Giraldo. Flavio Costa and Kevin Tan took down Josue Sanchez and Peter Jensen, 8-4.
Yokosuk fought off Kurz to win his first set 6-4, then took the match with a second set score of 6-0. Gamble was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Esquetini.
Molineiro and Costa both needed super tie-breaks to win their singles matches. Molineiro took his first set against Giraldo, 6-2, fell in the second set, 6-3, and held on for a 12-10 tie-break win. Costa won 6-1 and Sanchez came back to win the second set, 6-4, before Costa pulled away for a 10-2 super tie-break win.
At No. 6 singles, Fabio Medina was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over Jensen.
Olivet Nazarene picked up a team point with a win at No. 3 singles. Gonsalvez took down Kim, 6-3 and 6-4.
Lee enters SSAC play with a trip to Emmanuel College this coming Thursday. Match time is set for 3 p.m.
