Tracking Down The Waiter At Mexi-Wing 7

Mexi-Wing 7 has been open at 5773 Brainerd Road for quite a few months, but this is the first time we have eaten there.  It still looks much the same as it did in past lifetimes of previous tenants.  One odd note on the menu is “we prefer cash”.  They will give you a free punch card if you pay cash, although they do take credit cards.

The food is pretty much the standard Mexican fare menu, but with a lot of focus on wings.   They say their wings are never frozen and are the “biggest and best” available.  The wings we ordered (medium) were very good, but I didn’t find that out until the next day (more on that later).

When a menu is HUGE, it is difficult to narrow down the selection.  I finally went with a combination plate featuring one each – taco, enchilada and chili relleno ($6.99).  The food was delicious.  I’ve never been much on enchiladas and/or burritos, but this was a good enchilada!  The chili relleno was so HOT (spicy) I had trouble eating it.  It would have been perfect for Wayne.

Wayne ordered the California Burrito #2 with ground beef, rice, lettuce, refried beans and sour cream in a soft shell flour tortilla ($5.25).  He really enjoyed it, saying the meat was well seasoned  and the “fillers” didn’t overtake the beef.

The prices at Mexi-Wings are reasonable and we decided we would definitely give them another try, even though our service was not so good.  We ordered a 5-wing appetizer ($3.50) to share before our meal.  When our meal was brought to us by someone other than our server, they never mentioned the wings.  We kept waiting for him (our server) to return, but no such luck.

I also wanted guacamole to go with my meal, but no one appeared.  I could see our server going in and out of the bar (it appeared he was bartending as well) and to and from the kitchen, but never glancing our way.  Finally, I decided if I wanted guacamole before my food was gone, I needed to take matters into my own hands!  I walked over to the kitchen door and caught him as he was coming out.  Didn’t take long to get my guacamole!

Being completely finished with our meal, we decided not to mention the wings.  We’d just make certain they weren’t on the check.  Lo and behold, our server appeared with our bill and our wings.  Needless to say I asked for a carry-out box.  I tried them the next day and they were really good wings – but maybe next time we should call ahead for the wings.  Neither of us like the buffalo-style wings, preferring just the wing with the spices/sauce cooked on them.  These were exactly that – although you can order buffalo-style if that’s what you prefer.

Wayne liked the tomatillo salsa (glad our server didn’t forget that).  I later heard through the grapevine that the guy waiting on us was one of the owners.  My suggestion is:  hire another server, serving isn’t your forte.  There are just some people that aren’t meant to be servers (me included ), and you are one of those.

The menu features lunch specials (11 a.m.–3 p.m. Monday through Saturday), as well as vegetarian options and desserts.

Hours for Mexi-Wing 7 are 11 a.m. until 10: p.m. seven days a week.  Give them a try – but keep your fingers crossed you get the other server.
